  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1 tablespoon espresso powder or instant coffee
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Notes:

    • Keep frosting covered with a damp cloth until ready to use. For best results, keep the frosting bowl in the refrigerator when not in use.
    • Substitute unsweetened chocolate square for 1/3 cup of dutch processed cocoa powder when in a pinch. You may need to add additional liquid to maintain the light and fluffy consistency.
    • Instant coffee or espresso that comes in granules should be ground to a fine texture or dissolved in the milk before adding to the frosting.
    • Keep in mind that powders and spices tend to create stiff frosting, so adding more milk may be needed to achieve a spreading consistency.
    • To Store: Refrigerate for 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months in an airtight container. Bring the frosting back to room temperature and re-whip before using.
