  1. Fit decorating bag with coupler and round decorating tip 12. Fill decorating bag 1/2 full or less with stiff icing.
  2. Attach a flower nail template, if using, to the flower nail. Using a dot of icing, attach icing flower square.
  3. Hold the decorating bag at a 90? angle to the flower nail with the tip slightly above the center of the nail. Using a firm, steady pressure, squeeze out a heavy base of icing, keeping the tip buried as you squeeze.
  4. When base is 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide, gradually raise the tip and decrease the pressure to form a cone-like shape about 3/4 in. high. Stop pressure, pull up and lift away.
  5. Change to petal decorating tip 104.
  6. Make the center wrap. Hold the decorating bag with the wide end of the tip down at a 45? angle to the flat surface of the nail at 4:30 (7:30 for left-handed decorators). The wide end of the tip should touch the icing base at or slightly below the midpoint, and the narrow end of the tip should point up and angle slightly inward.

Rotate the flower nail and move tip up until the ribbon of icing overlaps itself at the top of the base. Relax pressure as you move the tip down to the base. Stop squeezing; lift tip away.

  7. Make the first row. Position bag so wide end of tip is down and touching the base at or slightly below the midpoint, and narrow end of tip is straight up. While squeezing, turn nail one full rotation overlapping the starting point. Stop squeezing; lift tip away.
  8. Make the second row. Rotate nail 1/3 turn. Position bag so wide end of tip is down and touching the base directly beneath the first petal row, narrow end angled out slightly. While squeezing, turn nail one full rotation. Stop squeezing, lift tip away.

Make third, and if desired fourth rows. Repeat same as second row, rotating the nail 1/3 turn and adjusting the narrow end of the tip out a little farther from the base for each row.

  9. Hints:

Use different size petal tips for different size roses.

If you are using a petal tip other than 104, adjust the rose base so it is 1-1/2 times as high as the rose tip opening.

If desired, the rose Flower Nail Template can be attached to the flower nail as a guide for the rose base. Attach an icing flower square over the template with a dot of icing.
