After piping flower decorations, here are a couple of ways to add an extra touch of color to bring your flowers to life. Use Color Mist to create an airbrushed effect on flowers. Great for producing beautiful gradient colors, Color Mist comes in 11 colors, including gold, silver and pearl for adding a soft shimmer all the way to a metallic look. Pearl Dust (shimmer) and Color Dust (matte) add hints of color to create soft effects on royal icing flowers. Both Pearl Dust and Color Dust are dry powders, so they should only be used on dried royal icing flowers.

  1. Use Color Mist to create an airbrushed effect on flowers. Great for producing beautiful gradient colors, Color Mist comes in 11 colors, including gold, silver and pearl for adding a soft shimmer all the way to a metallic look.
  2. Before starting, line your work surface with wax or parchment paper to avoid staining.
  3. On either buttercream or royal icing flowers, hold the Color Mist can about 6 inches away from the treat for saturated color, or about 12 inches away for a lighter touch of color.

Hint: Use short bursts to prevent oversaturating the flower with color, which can cause it to melt.

  4. Like Color Mist, Pearl Dust (shimmer) and Color Dust (matte) add hints of color to create soft effects on royal icing flowers. Both Pearl Dust and Color Dust are dry powders, so they should only be used on dried royal icing flowers.
  5. Dip a decorating brush in dust. Apply to inner corners or edges of petals.
  6. For intense color accents, add a few drops of lemon extract to either Pearl Dust or Color Dust. Wet Pearl Dust will create a metallic effect; wet Color Dust will create a vibrant matte effect.

Hint: Make sure not to apply too much lemon extract as it will dissolve royal icing.
