Make cookie fan shapes. Prepare and roll out cookie dough
following recipe directions. Use knife and pattern to cut five fans. Bake and cool cookies.
Prepare royal icing following recipe directions. Tint icing Christmas red/red-red combination (for red). Reserve a portion of full-strength icing. Thin remaining icing to pouring consistency. Place cookies on cooling grid over parchment paper-covered cookie sheet. Pour on thinned icing to cover cookies
. Tap to settle. Let dry overnight on parchment paper-covered cake boards.
2 DAYS IN ADVANCE
Decorate fan shapes. Use assorted scroll designs from 28-pc. decorative press set to mark designs on dried cookies. To mark designs, brush edge of presses with piping gel then press onto cookies. Use a symmetrical pattern and matching designs on each cookie.
Use tip 363 and a portion of reserved full- strength red royal icing to cover marks with outlines and scrolls. Use tip 4 to overpipe designs; let dry overnight.
1 DAY IN ADVANCE
Bake and cool topping off success cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Place cake on foil- wrapped cake board, cut to fit.
Decorate cake. Prepare white and chocolate buttercream icings following recipe directions. Tint a portion of white buttercream golden yellow/lemon yellow combination (for yellow). Tint chocolate buttercream black.
Use spatula and white buttercream to Use spatula to ice sides smooth . Use tip 3 and black buttercream to outline cap. Use tip 16 to fill in cap with stars.
Use tip 8 and yellow buttercream to pipe rope. Use tip 5 to pipe tassel strings. Use tip 8 to pipe knot. Use tip 12 and black buttercream to pipe dot button; use finger dipped in cornstarch to flatten to an oval, 1 in. x 3/4 in.
DAY OF CELEBRATION
Assemble cake and cookies. Position fan cookies around border of prepared base board, leaving open star pattern in the center. Position cake in center. Use dots of piping gel to attach jumbo confetti sprinkles to star area. Use tip 5 and reserved full-strength red royal icing to attach fan cookies to board.
