Make layered cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool two 8 in. cake layers. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions violet, blue and yellow. Prepare, torte, fill and stack cakes for a 2-layer cake, 5 in. high. Place on a cake circle.
Decorate cake. Use spatula and violet icing to ice bottom of cake side smooth. Use spatula and blue icing to ice center of cake side smooth. Use spatula to gently blend blue and violet icings where the colors meet. Use spatula and yellow icing to ice top of cake side and top of cake smooth. Use spatula to gently blend blue and yellow icings where the colors meet. Use spatula to add spatula marks.
