Red Velvet Heart Cake


Whether it's Valentine's Day or "just another day," baking a Red Velvet Heart Cake for that special someone is the perfect way to show your love. One slice into the cake will reveal its velvety-rich red inside - quite a contrast to the fluffy white exterior! For an extra touch, top with strawberries dipped in white chocolate and colored sugars. May be baked as a 9-inch round for square cake also.

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray pan with vegetable pan spray.

Step 2

In medium bowl, cream butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy.

Step 3

Add eggs, icing color and vanilla; mix well. Stir together flour, cocoa and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to batter mixture, beating until well blended. Stir baking soda into vinegar; fold carefully into batter.

Step 4

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely.

Step 5

While cake cools, wash and dry strawberries. Melt candy according to package directions. Holding strawberries by stem, dip into melted candy and gently tap to remove any excess; sprinkle or dip into desired sugar. Place on parchment or waxed paper covered cookie sheets; refrigerate until set, about 10 minutes. (May be made several hours in advance.)

Step 6

To decorate: Spatula ice cake fluffy with buttercream icing. Add candy dipped strawberries just before serving.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice to see you used a true red cake recipe. This is very close to my family's recipe from 40 yrs ago (called Waldorf Astoria Red). It was paired with a fluffy white frosting. Family tradition year after year !!! Cake is easy to make!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love Red Velvet & this was a great success! I made 2 cakes & stacked & filled. I didn't use the BC mix, but made my own, cream cheese & BC icing combo. & used for filling & icing. I took the cake toppings (from leveling the cake) & crumbled, added some coconut and covered the sides of the cake w/crumbs. I spatula iced top of cake and swirled flowing the lines of the pan, made it look more fluffy. Added strawberries as noted and added 3 little royal roses in red. A wonderful cake!

The delicious taste of red velvet cake and creamy butter cream frosting is the prefect way to enjoy the holiday. Use Wilton quick release to remove the cake from the pan. Make sure you watch the timer on the oven.
