Step 1

Bake and cool soccer ball cake and two 9 in. x 6 in. cakes from paisley pan set. Cakes are one layer. Use knife to trim soccer ball cake to 2 1/2 in. high. Use knife to trim paisley cakes to 1 in. high. Reverse paisley cakes to make ears. Position cakes on separate foil-wrapped cake boards, cut to fit.

Step 2

Decorate facial features. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions brown/red-red combination (for brown) and black. Reserve remaining white. Use toothpick and pattern to mark dog face on soccer ball cake. Use tip 6 and white icing to pipe in eyes. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Use tip 4 and black icing to pipe in pupils. Pat smooth. Use tip 6 and black icing to pipe in nose. Pat smooth. Use tip 4 and black icing to outline mouth.

Step 3

Decorate spots and muzzle. Use toothpick to mark circle, 1 1/2 in. dia., around one eye, two spots, 2 1/2 in. wide x 1 3/4 in. deep, on sides of head and one spot, 3 in. wide x 3 3/4 in. deep on top of head. Use tip 18 and brown icing to cover both paisley cake ears plus spots, eye circle and muzzle with stars.

Step 4

Complete cake. Use tip 18 and white icing to cover remainder of head with stars. Position ears.
