Orange Buttercream uses real zest and orange juice; it's a natural with Margarita or Orange cakes and is a nice surprise on any chocolate cupcakes.

Step 1

Beat shortening and butter in large bowl with electric mixer until smooth. Gradually add sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well on medium speed.

Step 2

. Add orange juice, zest and orange Color Right. Beat until light and fluffy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I changed the recipe and used pure shortening instead of the mix and I did not have orange oil so I used fresh squeezed orange juice to replace the oil and the milk, even added extra until I got just the right amount of orange flavour. It was delicious, especially on top of the devil's food cupcakes. Chocolate and orange is just yummy! I used an orange zester (fine grater) rather than peel the orange and chop it up.
