Step 1
1 DAY IN ADVANCE
Bake and cool star cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint a portion light royal blue; reserve remaining white. Use spatula to Use spatula to ice sides smooth with blue and top smooth with white.Reserve remaining blue.
Step 2
Cut patchwork sections. Use knife and patchwork star pattern to cut Sugar Sheets! edible decorating paper for one red, one blue and three white background areas needed for patchwork design.
Step 3
Decorate patchwork sections. For blue and red sections, use narrow end of tip 2A to cut circles from white edible decorating paper. (You will need approximately 40 circles.)
For fireworks section, hold one of the cut circles as a guide for the open center of fireworks bursts. Use red and blue FoodWriter edible color markers to draw curved fireworks lines, 3/4 in. to 1 1/2 in. long, from open center. For partial fireworks bursts, adjust open center placement as needed, or just draw curved lines without the open center. Remove cut circles.
For red stripes, use knife to cut edible decorating paper strips, 5/8 in. wide in lengths needed. For blue stripes, cut strips 1/4 in. wide in lengths needed. Use Dab-N-Hold edible adhesive to attach circles, 3/4 in. apart, red stripes, 3/4 in. apart and blue stripes, 1/2 in. apart. Use black edible color marker to draw stitch marks, 1/16 in. from edges of sections, 3/8 in. long and 1/4 in. apart. Use brush and piping gel to attach patchwork sections to cake.
Step 4
Pipe border. Use tip 6 and reserved blue icing to pipe bead bottom border.
