Make hair tuft one day in advance. Knead 1/2 teaspoon Gum-Tex into 2 oz. black fondant. Use fingers to roll logs, 1/8 in. dia. x 3 in. long, tapering at one end. You will need 25 to 30 logs. Let dry overnight on cornstarch-dusted boards.
Make cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cake. Place cake on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit.
Ice cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions orange, black and violet. Reserve remaining white.
Decorate eyes. Use tip 1A and white icing to pipe ball eyes. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Use tip 12 and black icing to pipe dot pupils. Flatten and smooth. Use tip 2 and violet icing to pipe outline veins on eyes.
Decorate mouth. Use pattern and toothpick to trace mouth on cake top. Use tip 6 and black icing to outline and pipe in mouth. Use 9 in. spatula to smooth. Use tip 3 and white icing to pipe in teeth. Pat smooth.
Decorate fur. Use tip 233 and orange icing to pipe pull-out fur in various directions on remaining areas of cake. Insert fondant logs for hair tuft.
