Fit a decorating bag with tip 1M and medium consistency icing. Hold the piping bag at an angle with the back of the bag facing to the right (to the left for left-handed decorators).
Touch the tip to the surface and squeeze to attach the icing. Using constant pressure, move the tip out to the right, up then left and down to the surface in a tight circular motion. For left decorators pipe the spiral in the opposite direction.
Without releasing pressure, continue piping in the same circular motion moving the tip forward a little with each spiral. Spirals should be close together, slightly over lapping and of even height. If you need to stop piping before the border is complete, stop at the bottom of the spiral. Resume by touching the tip to the surface at the end of the previous spiral and continue the motion.
Repeat spirals to the desired length. To end a spiral border, tuck the end of the last spiral into the outside edge of the first spiral.
Keep the spirals level by consistently lifting and lowering the tip as you pipe. Experiment with different sized star and round tips to change the shape and size of the spiral.
