Step 1

Ice top and sides of 1-layer cake smooth. Use decorating comb on cake sides.

Step 2

For top and bottom borders, pipe tip 46 smooth side up band planks. Score with sharp knife to create wood grain effect. Pipe tip 2 dot nail heads.

Step 3

Make extras to allow for breakage and let dry. Pipe tip 46 smooth side up band planks for message.

Step 4

To make tool chest: Ice top of Mini Loaf cake smooth.

Step 5

Pipe three rows of tip 2B smooth side up band panels on each side; score panels with sharp knife to create wood grain effect.

Step 6

Print tip 2 message; pipe tip 2 dot nail heads. Set aside.

Step 7

Position tool box and candles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hi all, Well I completed this for Father's Day. It was not too difficult. I used buttercream icing for the wood planks, yet I think now that I know what Royal icing is, I would use that. My father in law liked it and my husband liked it also. Both are handyman kind of guys. The tool shaped candles are a must with this cake. Everyone asked where I got them. Thanks Wilton!.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This cake is a little more difficult than many others I have made. But it turns out very cute. Instead of making a mini loaf for the tool box I found a candy mold to make the tool box. I couldn't find the candle tools but I did have a candy mold set to make tools of my own. I also found a few tiny wind up tools in a local shop and put them in the tool box.
