Confetti of Fun Striped Cake


Hooray, it’s time to party! From birthdays to baby showers, this Confetti of Fun Striped Cake is a great way to celebrate your special occasion. Topped with fun confetti sprinkles, this cake also gives you room to add a personalized message or cake topper. Follow the instructions to create the fun stripes on the sides of the cake with either an icing comb or a decorating bag.

Step 1

Bake cake. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool two cake layers. Level, fill and stack layers for 6 in. high cake.

Step 2

Tint icing. Using Royal Blue icing color, tint 1 cup icing light blue. Using Pink icing color, tint 1 cup icing light pink. Reserve remaining icing white.

Step 3

Make cake stripes. Using cake comb method or bag method, make stripes around sides of cake.

Cake Comb Method:

  • Using white icing, ice cake smooth with thick layer of icing.
  • Place cake on turntable. Using square-toothed comb, comb sides of cake. Remove excess icing and repeat until grooves are even.
  • Chill cake until buttercream has crusted, at least 30 minutes.
  • Prepare decorating bag with light blue icing. Cut ½ in. tip off end of bag to form ¼ in. opening.
  • Starting at base of cake, pipe line of light blue icing to fill in grooves. Continue until all grooves are filled in.
  • Using icing smoother, smooth sides of cake. Color may appear smeared at first, but continue removing excess icing, wiping off smoother often, until colors are level.

Bag Method:

  • Prepare two decorating bags separately with white and light blue icing. Cut ½ in. off end of each bag to form ¼ in. openings.
  • Place cake on turntable. Starting at base of cake, pipe alternating lines of white and blue icing until sides of cake are covered. Using spatula and white icing, ice top of cake smooth.
  • Using icing smoother, smooth sides of cake. Remove excess icing, wiping off smoother often, until colors are level. Using spatula, smooth top of cake.
Step 4

Decorate cake. Prepare decorating bag with tip 6B and light pink icing. Pipe tight rope border around top edge of cake. Top with confetti sprinkles.
