One of the simplest techniques for decorating with fondant is to create cut-outs. Fondant shapes can be applied to lay at on the surface of a treat or dried so that they hold their shape when used as a topper.

Step 1

Roll out fondant to an even thickness using the fondant roller with purple guide rings. Dust the top of the fondant with a little cornstarch or confectioners’ sugar as you roll out (this will help make neat cut-outs).

Step 2

Press the cut-out into the at piece of fondant.

Step 3

Pull the excess fondant away rather than pulling out the newly cut shape. This will prevent the shape from being distorted.

Step 4

Attach the fondant decoration to your treat.

Hints:

  • Shapes can sometimes be too soft to transfer. Let the shapes set for about an hour before applying to a treat.

Circle cut-outs of 3 different colors and sizes look great on a white fondant background. I even use marbled colored fondant in shapes of shooting stars laid on a butter cream cake and gave it a cute effect that was very easy to create.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fondant cut outs are very simple, and can look very classy on any cake. I have found when sticking fondant cutouts to fondant, using Wilton's gum paste mix with a little bit of water makes them stick really well. :)
