Ingredients

  • 1 box cake mix or 4-5 cups batter

  • 4-5 cups buttercream frosting

  • Lemon yellow icing color

  • Leaf green icing color

  • Black icing color

  • Moss green icing color

  • Non-stick spray

  • Cornstarch

  • Black candy-coated chocolate candies

  1. Bake cake. Prepare cake batter following recipe instructions. Bake and cool cake according to pan instructions.
  2. Ice cake. Prepare two recipes buttercream frosting following recipe instructions. Using a spatula and 1 1/2 cups white frosting, ice sides, and background of cake smooth.
  3. Tint icing. Tint 1/2 cup frosting light green, 1/4 cup frosting dark sage green, and 1 cup frosting light sage green using color combinations provided.
    • Combine Lemon Yellow and Leaf Green icing colors to get light green color shown.
    • Combine Leaf Green, Moss Green and Lemon Yellow icing colors to get light and dark sage green icing colors shown.
  4. Using black icing color, tint 1/2 cup frosting black.
  5. Pipe spikes. Prepare decorating bag with tip 3 and dark sage green frosting. Using the zig-zag technique, pipe spikes on the back of the dinosaur. Smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch.
  6. Pipe mouth, nostril, eye, and nails. Prepare two decorating bags with tip 3. Fill one with black frosting, one with white icing. Using black icing, use the zig-zag technique to pipe mouth and nostril. Pat down with finger dipped in cornstarch.
  7. Using white frosting, use the zig-zag technique to fill in the eye, teeth, and nails. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch.
  8. Decorate the stomach. Prepare decorating bag with tip 5 and light green frosting. Pipe horizontal lines to fill in the stomach and bottom half of the tail. Reserve remaining frosting in the bag.
  9. Pipe outlines. Using reserved light green frosting, pipe outline around the nostril. Using black frosting with tip 3, pipe outlines of the dinosaur, as well as black outline over light green outline on the nostril.
  10. Outline pupil of the eye. Using the zig-zag technique, fill in. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch.
  11. Fill in the cake. Prepare decorating bag with tip 18 and light sage green frosting. Fill in the remaining parts of the dinosaur using the star fill-in technique.
  12. Add border. Position black candy-coated chocolate candies or chocolate chips around the bottom border of the cake.

Notes

    • Use a pastry brush to help spread the non-stick spray into the corners of the pan. This will sharpen the detailed outlines of the cake.
    • The dinosaur cake pan holds about 4-5 cups of batter or 1 box of cake mix.
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a cooling rack about 10-15 minutes before removing to prevent cracking or breaking. Let the cake cool for about 2 hours before decorating.
