Show off your piping skills with this Christmas Floral Cake. Featuring seven varieties of winter foliage, this beautiful cake is great for winter birthdays or wedding showers, as well. Featuring a variety of piping techniques, including rosettes, stars and leaves, this cake may look intricate, but it’s actually great for beginning decorators!

Step 1

Bake cake. Prepare cake mix following recipe instructions. Bake and cool three cake layers. Level one layer to 1 in. tall. Fill and stack layers for 5 in. high cake.

Ice smooth with white icing.

Step 2

Tint icing. Tint ½ cup icing each purple, red, blue-green and green using color combinations provided. Combine Rose and Royal Blue icing colors to get purple color shown. Combine Christmas Red and Pink icing colors to get red color shown. Combine Royal Blue and Juniper Green icing colors to get blue-green color shown. Combine Moss Green and Lemon Yellow icing colors to get green color shown.

Using Juniper Green icing color, tint ¼ cup icing dark green.

Using Brown icing color, tint ¼ cup icing brown.

Step 3

Decorate cake. Prepare decorating bags with couplers, tips and icing as follows:

  • Tip 2 and blue-green icing
  • Tip 67 and green icing
  • Tip 2 and brown icing
  • Tip 16 and white icing
  • Tip 1 and dark green icing
  • Coupler and purple icing (tip 10, 16 and 1 needed)
  • Coupler and red icing (tip 16 and 2 needed)
  • Coupler and white icing (tip 16 and 2 needed)
  • Coupler and green icing (tip 67 and 349 needed)

Reserve all bags until all piping is complete. All swags are piped starting on top of cake and working over edge.

Bead Flower and Star Swag: Using blue-green icing with tip 2, pipe 5-petal bead flowers. Using white icing and tip 1, pipe centers. Using red icing and tip 16, pipe stars. Using green icing and tip 349, pipe leaves.

White Star Flower Swag: Using white icing with tip 16, pipe stars. Using purple icing with tip 1, pipe flower centers. Using green icing and tip 349, pipe leaves.

Pine Branch and Rose Swag: Using brown icing with tip 2, pipe pine branch. Using dark green icing with tip 1, pipe pine needles. Using red icing and tip 16, pipe rosettes. Using green icing and tip 349, pipe leaves.

Pine Branch with Dots: Using brown icing with tip 2, pipe pine branch. Using dark green icing with tip 1, pipe pine needles. Using red icing and tip 1, pipe clusters of red dots.

Rosette Swag: Using purple icing and tip 16, pipe rosettes. Using green icing and tip 349, pipe leaves.

Dark Blue-Green Vine: Using blue-green icing and tip 2, pipe vine and leaves.

Rosebud Swag: Using brown icing and tip 2, pipe vine and branches. Switch purple bag to tip 101; pipe rosebuds on vine. Using dark green icing and tip 1, pipe calyxes of flowers and thorns.

Long Leaves Swag: Using green icing and tip 67, pipe elongated leaf. Using white icing and tip 16, pipe rosette flowers on leaf.
