Step 1

2 DAYS IN ADVANCE

Make jack-o-lantern cookie. Cut parchment paper to fit inside bottom of jack-o-lantern pan. Spray paper and pan with non-stick spray. Prepare cookie dough following recipe directions. Press into pan to 3/16 in. thick. Bake and cool cookie.

Step 2

Decorate jack-o-lantern cookie. Place cookie on cooling grid over parchment lined cookie sheet. Melt Candy Melts candy according to package directions. For stem, use green and a little yellow candy color from primary and garden sets to tint 1 1/2 oz. melted white candy green. Use green candy in cut parchment bag to pipe in stem. Chill until firm.

Use orange candy color from set to darken 12 oz. melted orange candy. Cover remainder of cookie with orange candy. Chill until firm. Use spatula to trim inside openings.

Use scissors to cut out facial features from Sugar Sheets! black edible decorating paper, about 1/2 in. larger than openings on all sides. Attach to back of cookie to cover facial feature openings, securing with melted candy. Let set, 3 to 5 minutes.

Use knife to cut plastic dowel rod to 11 in. long. Use melted orange candy to attach rod to back of cookie, leaving 3 in. extended at bottom. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 3

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Make cupcakes. Bake and cool cupcakes. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions orange, black and small amounts of sky blue, violet/rose combination (for violet), kelly green/lemon yellow combination (for green) and lemon yellow/golden yellow combination (for yellow).

Use spatula and orange icing to ice cupcake tops in a mounded shape. Use tip 12 and green icing to pipe pull-out stem, about 1/2 in. high. Use tip 2 and black icing to pipe assorted dot, pipe-in and outline faces.

Step 4

Bake and cool 10.75 in. x 7.8 in. oval cake. Cake is 2 layers, each 1 1/2 in. high. Place on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit. Use spatula and black icing to ice smooth. Use tip 8 and all colors except black to pipe dots on side, about 3/8 in. apart. Use tip 3 and black icing to pipe bead bottom border.

Step 5

Assemble treats. Insert cookie in cake. Position cupcakes around cake.
