Step 1
Make cake and six mini cupcakes. Prepare cake and cupcake batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cake and mini cupcakes. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions green and yellow, and small amounts of black and orange. Reserve remaining white. Torte, stack and fill for a 2-layer cake, 3 in. high.
Step 2
Decorate mini cupcakes. Use 9 in. angled spatula and yellow icing to ice mini cupcakes smooth. Use tip 4, cut disposable decorating bag and black icing to pipe dots for eyes. Use tip 4, cut disposable decorating bag and orange icing to pipe pull-out dot for beak. Use tip 18, cut disposable decorating bag and yellow icing to pipe pull-out stars for feathers.
Step 3
Decorate cake. Use 11 in. straight spatula and white icing to ice cake smooth. Use tip 48, cut disposable decorating bag and white icing to pipe basketweave on sides of cake. Use tip 233, cut disposable decorating bag and green icing to pipe grass on top of cake. Place mini cupcakes sideways on top of cake. Pipe additional grass around mini cupcakes to stabilize, if needed.
