Step 1

Prepare Icing
We suggest that you tint all icings at one time while cake cools. Refrigerate tinted icings in covered containers until ready to use.

Step 2

Make 2 3/4 cups buttercream icing:
Tint 1 cup red-red/golden yellow combination
Tint 1 cup black
Reserve 3/4 cup white

Step 3

Decorate in Order

Step 4

1. Use tip 3 white to pipe in white of eye and highlight in eye (smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch).
2. Use tip 3 black outline for eye, mouth and fin.
3. Use tip 3 black to pipe in eye pupil (smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch).
4. Use tip 3 white to pipe in highlight in eye (smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch).
5. Use tip 16 black stars to fill-in black stripes on fish, tail and fin.
6. Use tip 16 stars white to fill-in white stripes on fish.
7. Use tip 16 stars red-red/golden yellow combination to fill-in stripes on fish.

Step 5

Baking Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F or temperature per recipe directions. Your cake will unmold easily, without sticking, when you prepare the pan properly. Grease the inside of pan using a pastry brush and solid vegetable shortening (do not use butter, margarine or liquid vegetable oil). Spread the shortening so that all indentations are covered. Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons flour inside pan and shake so that flour covers all greased surfaces. Turn pan upside down and tap lightly to remove excess flour. If any shiny spots remain, touch up with more shortening and flour to prevent cake from sticking. (You can use vegetable oil pan spray or vegetable oil pan spray with flour, in place of solid shortening and flour, or use Wilton Cake Release, for perfect, crumb-free cakes or Bake Easy Non-Stick Spray for easy release).

Step 6

Make one 2-layer cake mix according to package or recipe directions. Pour the cake batter into pan, and if necessary, spread the batter around with a spatula to fill all areas of the pan evenly. Be careful not to touch sides or bottom of pan. Bake cake on middle rack of 350°F oven for 30-40 minutes or until cake tests done according to recipe directions.

Step 7

Make one 2-layer cake mix according to package or recipe directions. Pour the cake batter into pan, and if necessary, spread the batter around with a spatula to fill all areas of the pan evenly. Be careful not to touch sides or bottom of pan. Bake cake on middle rack of 350°F oven for 30-40 minutes or until cake tests done according to recipe directions.

Step 8

Remove cake from oven and cool on cake rack for 10 minutes. While the cake is still in the pan, carefully slice off the raised center portion of the cake. This allows the cake to sit more level and helps prevent cracking. To remove cake from pan, place cooling rack against cake and turn both cake rack and pan over. Lift pan off carefully. Cool cake at least one hour. Brush loose crumbs off cake. To transfer cake to serving board, hold a cake board against cake and turn both cake and rack over. Lift off rack. Hold another board against bottom of cake and turn cake over. Be sure to hold cake, rack and board close together while turning to prevent cake from cracking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I made the Tropical Fish Cake for my son 2nd birthday, followed the instructions for the icing and it worked perfectly, everyone asked where did I get the cake and they couldn't believe when I said I made it!!! Got congratulated by everyone and even a friend asked me to make a 'Nemo cake' as my son calls it, for her nephew. It made me think to start cake decoration as a second income. Thanks for all the tips on web.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I made this Tropical Fish Cake for my Grandsons birthday it looked great. When I was mixing the color, I was not sure how much to add so, I had to keep mixing and adding more to get it right. I would like to see wilton be more specific on the amount of color to add in the future so, I know in advance if I have enough on hand or have to buy more, other than that this Fish was a piece of cake. LOL

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Of the shaped pans I have used, this is one of the easiest to decorate because you can be so creative in the process. It was a real hit at the birthday party for an 8 year old girl, she loved it. We created a Tropical Party for her, with the cake being the center-piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My daughter loved this cake for her birthday. She thought it was nemo. I love this pan too. The possibilities are endless and when I made this particular design it came out great. Getting the stripes is a little tricky to get it just like the picture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was one of the first shape pans I ever made. It is pretty easy but the black icing makes for some unattractive teeth. The cake looked great though, even though I was such a novice
