Step 1

In advance: Make dump truck candy plaque.

Use candy colors to tint 3 oz. black, 2 oz. gray (use black color), 10 oz. red and 18 oz. yellow. Reserve 9 oz. white. Use piping method to fill in areas of pan; chill until firm after each addition. Pipe gray wheel, rims and white window. Pipe black tires, bolts and axles. Pipe yellow dump bed and red cab. Pipe gray exhaust pipe and dump rod. When completely set, unmold onto soft cloth. Place plaque on parchment paper-covered surface. Pipe white candy on top edge of dump bed; immediately sprinkle with jumbo nonpareils. Let set. Cut two dowel rods to 7 1/2 in. long. Attach to back of plaque, behind wheels, with melted candy, leaving 2 in. extended to insert into cake. For topping stream, slightly curve a lollipop stick and place on waxed paper covered board. Using white candy in cut bag, pipe a 1/2 in. x 4 1/2 in. curved line over stick. Immediately sprinkle with jumbo nonpareils. Chill until firm.

Step 2

Make candy shells in baking cups, using 1 oz. portions of orange- or red-tinted candy for each.

Step 3

Make cookies. Prepare and roll out dough. Use boy cutter to cut four kids. Use knife to cut two triangle easels, 1 in. x 2 in., for each cookie. Bake and cool cookies.

Decorate on waxed paper-covered boards using royal icing. Use tip 3 to outline and pipe in shirts, pants, and shoes. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Pipe tip 2 zigzag and dot trims on clothes. Pipe tip 2 dot eyes, outline mouths, hair and bows. Let dry. Attach easels to back of cookies with melted candy. Let set.

Step 4

Bake and cool 1-layer cake and four cupcakes in silicone cups supported by cookie sheet. Unmold cupcakes from cups; place in candy shells.

Step 5

Ice cake and cupcake tops smooth in buttercream icing. Sprinkle cupcakes with jumbo nonpareils. Mark cake sides for drop strings 1 7/8 in. apart and 1 in. deep. Pipe tip 3 double drop strings 1/2 in. and 1 in. deep. Pipe tip 18 shell bottom border.

Step 6

At Party: Insert candy plaque into cake. Position one cupcake behind dump truck bed on side of cake. Insert end of topping stream and attach other end to plaque with melted candy; let set. Position remaining cupcakes and kid cookies. Position icing decorations on cake top.

These versatile Baking Cup Shells are easy to make and even easier to fill. Made with candy melts, these shells can be filled with just about anything--fruit, mints, nuts, or your favorite treat.

The drop string is traditionally used as decoration on the sides of the cake and is the basis of more ornate stringwork. Called a ?drop? string because the line of piped icing is allowed to ?drop? or fall, by itself, before re-attaching it to your cake. Pipe a row of single strings or multiple strings in rows of two or three.

The Shell is the most popular icing technique of all. It's the basis for many borders, fleurs de lis and more. Lift the tip only slightly when piping to avoid a bumpy look.
