The 80's are back on a 3-tier fondant cake that captures the big hair, flashy fashion and bright neon colors that defined the decade! Setting the style is an original Material Girl topper, made with the Wilton Teen Doll Pick and Shape-N-Amaze Edible Decorating Dough.
Make doll legs 1 week in advance. Use black Shape-N-Amaze edible decorating dough to roll a log, about 10 in. long x 3/4 in. dia. Bend log in half. Taper ends to form feet, slightly narrow knee areas and slightly bend up left knee. Position legs on craft block. Support with crumpled paper napkins; let set, about 72 hours.
Tint fondant 3 days in advance. Tint 27 oz. fondant violet, 15 oz. black, 3 1/2 oz. yellow, 3 1/2 oz. rose, 2 1/4 oz. orange, 3 oz. blue, 2 1/4 oz. green and 1 oz. red. Reserve 24 oz. violet fondant for covering cake.
Make leg warmers also 3 days in advance. Use 9 in. fondant roller with pink guide rings to roll out 1 oz. rose fondant 1/16 in. thick. Cut two rectangles, 3 in. long x 2 in. wide. Pleat rectangles lengthwise, starting at narrow end, then slightly pull back pleats. Use damp brush to attach around legs.
Make shirts also 3 days in advance. Roll out 1 oz. violet and 1 1/2 oz. black fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. For violet undershirt, cut two rectangles, 3 in. x 4 in. Brush doll pick body with piping gel. Attach rectangles to body, pressing seams together at sides and shoulders. Trim a ?U? shape around neck and shoulders. Leave a shoulder strap, 1/8 in. wide and trim fondant around arm.
For black shirt, cut two rectangles, 3 in. long x 4 in. wide. Use damp brush to attach one rectangle to front and one to back of doll pick. Trim and press side seams together. Use scissors to cut opening around head and shoulders and trim sleeves. Trim off excess and shape around pick.
For shirt graphic design, roll out yellow and rose fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Use pattern and knife to cut yellow triangle. Use smooth side of heart cut-out ?E? to cut rose heart for shirt. Use black edible color marker to write ?80? on heart. Use damp brush to attach triangle and heart to shirt.
Make skirt also 3 days in advance. Roll out 3/4 oz. blue fondant, 1/16 in. thick. Use scalloped side of round cut-out ?A? to cut two circles. Place circles separately on medium shaping foam. Use large plastic veining tool to score pleats at scallop divisions, pulling out 1 in. from edge. Attach to legs at torso bend.
Style hair and make-up also 3 days in advance. Pull hair back to make a wide pony tail; secure with twist tie. Use comb to tease hair. Use ribbon to tie a bow around hair. Trim excess ribbon as needed.
For makeup, use brush to dust cheeks with deep pink Color Dust edible accents. Separately mix deep pink and periwinkle blue edible accents with lemon extract. Use brush and mixtures to paint eye make-up. Use black edible color marker to draw eyeliner and eyelashes. Insert doll pick in legs.
Make bangles, earrings and necklace also 3 days in advance. For bangles, roll out tinted fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Cut six strips, each 1 in. long x 3/16 in. wide. Wrap strips around arm, attaching ends with piping gel. For earrings, roll out rose fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use small heart mini cut-out (ejector-style) to cut two hearts. For hooks, cut two strips, each ½ in. long x 1/16 in. wide. Use brush and piping gel to attach heart to strip, then attach to ear. Use small end of veining tool to insert a portion of the strip into ear hole.
For green necklace, roll a 3/4 in. ball of green fondant into a log, 4 1/2 in. long x 1/16 in. dia. For orange necklace, roll a 1/2 in. ball into a log, 3 1/2 in. long x 1/16 in. dia. Use veining tool to score bead marks, 1/16 in. apart. Use brush and piping gel to attach ends of necklaces together and secure around neck.
Make cassettes 2 days in advance. Use 9 in. fondant roller with pink guide rings to roll out black fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use pattern and knife to cut eight each black cassette bodies and bases. Use damp brush to attach base to bottom of body, leaving 1/8 in. of base hanging over body.
For labels, roll out yellow, rose, orange, blue, violet and green fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Use patterns and knife to cut inner and outer labels, two each in rose, violet and blue and one each in remaining colors. Also cut two matching color sprocket holes for each cassette. Use narrow end of tip 6 to cut four matching color holes for each cassette base. Use damp brush to attach labels and holes to cassettes. Let dry on cornstarch-dusted board, about 48 hours.
Make buttons also 2 days in advance. For bases, roll out 4 oz. black fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use smooth side of round cut-out ?B? to cut 12 bases. For message circles, roll out 1/2 oz. of each remaining color of tinted fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use smooth side of round cut-out ?C? to cut two circles in each color. Use damp brush to attach circles to bases. Roll out red fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use large heart mini cut-out (ejector-style) to cut 12 hearts. Attach to message circle. Use black edible color marker to write message. Let dry on cornstarch-dusted board, about 48 hours. Reserve remaining fondant.
Make layered cake also 2 days in advance. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake two 10 in. cake layers, two 8 in. cake layers and three 6 in. cake layers.
Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Level, fill and stack 10 in. layers for a 2-layer cake, 4 in. high, 8 in. layers for a 2-layer cake, 3 in. high and 6 in. layers for a 3-layer cake, 6 in. high.
Cover cakes with fondant 1 day in advance. Tint 48 oz. fondant teal and 48 oz. mauve. Use spatula and buttercream icing to lightly ice cakes. Prepare and cover 10 in. cake with mauve fondant, 8 in. cake with reserved violet fondant and 6 in. cake with teal fondant. Prepare cakes for stacked construction.
Make rectangle designs. Prepare thinned fondant adhesive following recipe directions. Roll out 1 1/4 oz. each black and yellow fondant, separately, 1/16 in. thick. Cut out 40 rectangles in each color, 1 1/4 in. long x 3/8 in. wide. Cut an ?L? shaped border from black rectangles, 1/8 in. wide. Use brush and thinned fondant adhesive to attach eight yellow rectangles randomly to each side of 6 in. cake. Attach black border to edge of each yellow rectangle.
Attach remaining fondant accents. Use brush and thinned fondant adhesive to attach two cassettes to each side of 10 in. cake and three buttons to each side of 8 in. cake, alternating colors on each side.
For broken triangle designs, roll out white fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use pattern and knife to cut five triangles for each side of 6 in. cake, plus top. Cut triangles into seven strips, 1/8 in. wide. Use brush and thinned fondant adhesive to attach strips to cake, 1/8 in. apart, in a triangle shape.
Assemble cake. Stack cakes on cake pedestal. Position doll.
