Step 1

2 DAYS IN ADVANCE

Make Thomas candy plaque. Melt white Candy Melts candy according to package directions. Use primary and garden candy color sets to tint melted white candy as follows: 4 oz. yellow, 5 oz. red, 8 oz. black, 10 oz. gray (use black), 2 oz. orange, 2 oz. green and 24 oz. blue/violet combination (for blue). Reserve 4 oz. white.

Use melted candy in cut parchment bags to mold plaque in Thomas & Friends pan as follows: Pipe in yellow headlights. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Pipe in black pupils, eyebrows, headlight accents and bolts on red bumper area. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Pipe in white eyes and teeth. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Pipe in red bumper and gray face. Chill until firm, 5 to 10 minutes. Pipe in gray top bumper and wheels. Chill until firm, 5 to 10 minutes. Pipe in white area under train. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Fill remaining areas of pan, 1/4 in. thick, with melted blue candy. Chill until firm, 15 to 20 minutes. Unmold plaque. Use melted black candy in cut parchment bag to pipe outlines. Use melted white candy in cut parchment bag to pipe dot eye highlights. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 2

Make candy balloons. Position circle metal cutter on non-stick biscuit/brownie pan. Use melted white candy in cut parchment bag to pipe balloon highlight. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Use melted yellow candy in cut parchment bag to fill cutter 1/4 in. thick. Chill until firm, 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat to make blue, red, green and orange balloons. For balloon ties, use matching melted candy in cut parchment bag to pipe triangles, 5/8 in. wide x 1/2 in. high on pan. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes. Use melted candy to attach ties to balloons.

Step 3

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Bake and cool 12 in. x 18 in. sheet cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Place cake on foil-wrapped 13 in. x 19 in. board.

Step 4

Ice cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions lemon yellow/golden yellow combination (for yellow), orange, light and dark royal blue, leaf green, black and Christmas red/red-red combination (for red). Reserve remaining white.

Use spatula and light blue icing ice cake smooth.

Step 5

Decorate cake. Cut six bamboo dowel rods to 2 in. high. Insert in cake where candy plaque will rest. Position candy plaque and candy balloons on cake.

Use tip 2 and black icing to pipe balloon strings. Use tip 3 and various tinted icings to pipe outline streamers and dot confetti. Use tip 18 and white icing to pipe shell bottom border.
