This fun fowl is easy to figure pipe directly on your cake using stiff buttercream. Or, you can make them in advance using stiff royal icing on a waxed paper-covered cake board. If made in advance, be sure to store them away from bright or fluorescent light to prevent colors from fading.

Instructions:

Step 1

Combine Lemon Yellow with a little Golden Yellow for yellow shown. Make upright body and head, holding Round Decorating Tip 2A at a 90° angle to surface. Start squeezing, applying a steady, even heavy pressure. As the icing begins to build up, raise the tip with it, but keep its end buried in the icing. To complete your shape, stop squeezing as you bring the end of the tip to the surface; circle slightly using edge of tip to shave off icing point.

Step 2

Position Tip 2 at a 45° angle to surface, pipe dot eyes using white icing, pupils in black icing and cheeks in yellow icing. Pipe a pull-out dot beak and outline feet using yellow icing and Tip 2.

Step 3

Using Yellow icing, pipe top head feathers, holding Leaf Decorating Tip 349 at a 90° angle and pulling up. Pipe wings, holding Leaf Decorating Tip 67 at a 45° angle and pulling down and out, overlapping twice to create wing shape.
