Cinco de Mayo

With Help from Wilton, Creating Tasty Treats will have Guests Shouting, "Olé!"

If the words "Cinco de Mayo" mean nothing to you, start brushing up on your Spanish because this May fifth it's time for a fiesta! In Spanish, Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May, the famous date back in 1862 when the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla. Create your own Cinco de Mayo festival in your home with wonderful recipes and authentic activities from Wilton!

"Cinco de Mayo has grown into an extremely popular holiday," states Nancy Siler, the consumer affairs director of Wilton Enterprises. "Cinco de Mayo is the perfect time to celebrate with family and friends by creating delicious recipes while celebrating an important historical event."

Queso es Bueno

"Cheese is good," especially when paired with vegetables or sausage to create delicious Queso Quesadillas. Savory cheeses like Pepper Jack, Mexican Chihuahua, or Colby-Jack, along with red or green peppers and salsa are nestled inside two flour tortillas then lightly cooked to create this Mexican favorite. Use Wilton's own Comfort Grip™ Cookie Cutters to fashion these yummy appetizers, then top with sour cream, salsa or guacamole. Olé!

Let Them Eat Cake!

Margaritas and irresistible desserts are traditional favorites at Cinco de Mayo festivities. This year, combine the two and create Wilton's Margarita Cake. Lime zest, white cake mix and non-alcoholic margarita mix are combined to create a perfectly light and tart treat for the whole family to enjoy. Covered in Creamy White Buttercream Icing with fresh strawberries and limes for garnish, this is one cake that will have guests saying it's so good or "Es muy bueno!"

Savory Spreads

Every Cinco de Mayo fiesta needs a delicious serving of tortilla chips and a decadent dip. Cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chilies and savory spices are combined and baked atop a crushed corn chip crust. Wilton's Mexican Savory Cheese Spread wouldn't be complete without sour cream and spicy cheddar cheese as a topping. This tangy spread packs a flavorful punch that will be the hit of fiestas for years to come. Substitute jalapeno peppers for an extra spicy variety!

Belle of the Ball

Wilton's Fiesta Girl Cake is a must-have for any children's Cinco de Mayo party. A basic cake mix serves as the base for this adorable doll, while colored icing provides the delicate ruffles that line the bottom of her dress. If you're thinking she's almost to precious to eat, you're right! Let the kids battle out who gets the first slice by playing these fun Cinco de Mayo games.

Jumping Beans: Now is the chance to let the kids jump around like crazy while listening to classic Mariachi music. Periodically stop the music and those still moving are out. Play until one winner remains. Steal the Sombrero: Have the children draw and cut out a sombrero. Tape the sombreros to each child's back. The kids have to try to steal the others' sombreros without losing theirs. Any child who loses his or her sombrero has to immediately replace it with one they have stolen. If the child doesn't have another sombrero, they are out.
