3 days in advance: Make oval topper with lace points.

Tape oval pattern to cake board; cover with waxed paper. Outline with tip 2 and full-strength color flow; let set. Flow in with thinned color flow. Let dry 24 hours. Decorate remaining details and lace points with full-strength color flow. Pipe tip 2 initial; let dry 24 hours. To make 25 lace points, tape pattern to cake board; cover with waxed paper. Spray with vegetable pan spray to help pieces release when dry; wipe lightly with tissue. Outline pattern with tip 2. Pipe tip 2 dots on extended pattern lines. Make extras to allow for breakage and let dry 24 hours. Make a hole in craft block with cookie stick. Peel off waxed paper from oval and attach stick to back, leaving 5 in. extended at bottom. Let dry. Insert topper in craft block. Attach 2 to 3 lace points at a time. Pipe a tip 2 line of icing on edge of oval; position lace points. Continue attaching lace points around entire oval. Overpipe edge of oval with tip 2 beads. Let dry 24 hours.

The Zigzag is a popular way to fill in outlined areas, perfect for ribbed sweater and cuff effects. You can also use tight zigzags to cover the entire side of your cake—they look great!

The bead shape makes impressive borders outlines and accents on letters and designs; also a cute trim on clothing and gingerbread houses. The basis for making piped hearts and figure piping.

The perfect look for formal presentations, such as wedding and anniversary cupcakes. The precise, lacy design of this freehand technique depends on the continuous curving strings that do not overlap or touch.
