Make cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool 8 in. round cakes. Cakes are 4 in. high (2 layers, 2 in. high). Place on foil-wrapped cake circle.
Ice cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint yellow. Use spatula and yellow icing to ice cake top smooth and crumb coat sides.
Decorate cake. Use ruler and toothpick to mark 1 in. horizontal divisions on cake side. Use tip 2B and yellow icing to pipe loops on cake sides. Begin at the first bottom mark, place tip opening smooth side down flat against side of cake. Pipe 1 in. long loops around cake. Continue for next row, reversing tip position so tip lies serrated side down. Repeat, each row, alternating tip position to cover cake sides.
On cake top, measure 1 in. from outside edge. Use tip 2B and yellow icing to pipe loops around the circle, moving in 1 in. and alternating smooth and serrated sides. At the center, pipe six short loops and one loop in the center.
