Step 1

Prepare gingerbread dough and roll out 1/8 in. thick. For house front and back, cut 2 cookies with Comfort-Grip cutter. Trim off chimney. Cut 2 side walls, each 2 x 2 1/2 in. high and 2 roof panels, each 3 1/2 x 2 7/8 in. high. Bake and cool all pieces. If pieces expand during baking, measure when cool and trim to original size using serrated knife. Cut approximately 18-24 gingerbread boys using cutter from set; bake and cool.

Step 2

Assemble and decorate house. On foil-wrapped cake circle, using tip 4, attach front, back and side panels with icing; let set. To support roof, cut a 2 x 3 1/2 in. long piece of cake board and bend in half. Attach roof panels, centered on each half of support, with icing. Position roof on assembled house. Pipe tip 4 seam on top peak; let set. Remove roof from house and let dry, standing on a side edge.

Step 3

Mark a 1 x 2 1/4 in. door; outline door and fill in with tip 3 zigzags (smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch). Attach confetti sprinkles from Flowerful Medley assortment on door frame and for doorknob with tip 2 dots of icing.

Step 4

For windows, roll out spice drops on surface sprinkled with sugar; cut a 1/2 in. square for door window. Cut 1 x 1/2 in rectangle for front window and 1 in. squares for side and back windows. Attach with tip 3. Outline window frames and panes with tip 3; pipe tip 2 icicles. Attach striped candy awnings and jelly rope windowsills, cut to fit, with tip 4. Pipe tip 3 scrolls above front window; attach confetti in center.

Step 5

Using tip 3, attach pinwheel candy above door and spice drop half in center; cut curve off candy canes and attach candy sticks on house corners. Position roof on house (do not attach); ice smooth and cover with jumbo confetti, overlapping from bottom to top. Pipe tip 3 zigzags on peak and position spice drops. Pipe tip 4 icicles on eaves. Attach green spice drops around house for bushes; trim bases as needed for desired height. Ice cake circle fluffy. Position striped candy for front step; let dry.

Step 6

Decorate gingerbread boys with tip 1 facial features and tip 2 clothing; let dry. Fill house with boys.

The Zigzag is a popular way to fill in outlined areas, perfect for ribbed sweater and cuff effects. You can also use tight zigzags to cover the entire side of your cake—they look great!

Characters or designs are often outlined first, then piped in with stars or zigzags. Outlines can also be used for facial features.
