Set the pace for your little road-racer?s birthday! We?ve used a 1-layer oval cake but design can easily be adapted to use round cake pans.

Step 1

In advance: Make drivers and race cars. Use fondant from Primary (green, red, yellow, blue) and Natural (black) Multi Packs. For gray, mix 1/2 oz. black fondant into 1 oz. white fondant (reserve 2 oz. white). Roll out fondant 1/8 in. thick unless otherwise specified. Assemble pieces in order using fondant adhesive. Let dry on waxed-paper covered boards.

Step 2

Bodies: Flatten a 1 in. ball of fondant into a 1 1/4 x 1 x 5/8 in. high torso. Roll 1 1/2 x 3/8 in. diameter tapered logs for arms; flatten slightly at shoulder when attaching. Shape oval hands from 5/16 in. balls of fondant; attach to arms and bend around steering wheel.

Step 3

Helmets: Roll out colors 1/16 in. thick. Cut a 2 in. diameter circle. Attach to back of head topper using Piping Gel; cut and trim as needed. Cut ear holes using narrow end of tip 4. Cut 1/8 x 2 in. chin strap and 1/8 x 4 in. stripes. Insert head into body.

Step 4

Racecars: Bake and cool four egg-shaped cakes. Trim off raised decorations on egg cakes for level surface. Lightly ice with buttercream. Roll out colors, black, gray and white. Cover with fondant and smooth with hand. Cut black front wheels using wide end of tip 4; cut away center with narrow end of tip 12 and replace with gray circle. Cut back wheels using wide end of tip 190; cut away center with narrow end of tip 2A and replace with gray circle. Cut black steering wheel using wide end of tip 2A; cut 1/4 in. off bottom. Use gray to shape a 4 x 1/4 in. diameter log; bend into 1 1/2 in. high x 1 1/4 in. wide roll bar. Cut white side circles using wide end of tip 2A. Cut numbers for front and sides using Cut-Outs from set.

Step 5

Bake and cool 1-layer cake using largest oval pan from set. Ice smooth. Tint 24 oz. Chocolate Fondant black. Roll out 1/8 in. thick. Cut oval using largest pan as a guide. Cut out center using smallest pan as a guide. Position race track on cake, trimming if necessary. For checkered sides, cut squares using smallest Cut-Out from set. Attach to cake sides starting with top row; leaving width of square in between. Pipe tip 2 motion lines on track. Pipe tip 4 bead bottom border. Position cars and candles.
