Kooky Monster Halloween Cake


With a whole collection of icing colors, this Kooky Monster Halloween Cake is a fun and colorful way to celebrate Halloween or any October birthday! Using the popular star technique and pull-out star technique, this Halloween cake is a fun one for those who are new to cake decorating and are looking for a fun way to practice the buttercream star. This particular monster cake uses a pony pan, but you can get creative with your monster shapes by using other shaped character pans as well!

Step 1

2 DAYS IN ADVANCE

Make cookie horns, hands and feet. Prepare and roll out cookie dough following recipe directions. Use knife and patterns to cut two feet, one full horn, one half horn and two hands (reverse one for opposite side). Bake and cool cookies.

Step 2

Decorate cookies. Prepare royal icing following recipe directions. Tint portions lemon yellow/golden yellow combination (for yellow), leaf green/lemon yellow combination (for green), violet/rose combination (for violet) and royal blue.

Use tip 3 and violet royal icing to pipe outline divisions on horns. Use tip 16 and royal icing to cover remainder of horns with green stars, hands with blue stars and feet with yellow stars. Let dry 24 hours.

Step 3

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Bake and cool pony cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Use knife to trim o bridle areas. Position on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit.

Step 4

Decorate cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions black, orange and violet/rose combination (for violet). Reserve some white.

Use toothpick to mark mouth and teeth areas. Use spatula and black icing to ice mouth smooth. Use tip 3 and black icing to outline mouth. Use tip 3 and white icing to outline and pipe in teeth. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch.

Use tip 2A and white icing to pipe a small and a large mound for eyes. Pat smooth. Use tip 8 and black icing to pipe ball pupils. Pat smooth. Use tip 16 and orange icing to cover head and body with stars. Use tip 18 and violet icing to pipe pullout star hair in random directions. Insert horns into hair. Use tip 16 and orange icing to attach hands and feet to cake.
