Step 1

2 DAYS IN ADVANCE

Make eyelashes. Prepare royal icing following recipe directions. Tint a portion black. Reserve remaining white. Use tip 3 and black royal icing to pipe 32 eyelashes, 1 in. long, on smallest wave of parchment paper-covered wave flower former. Make extras to allow for breakage. Let dry overnight.

Step 2

Make cookies. Prepare and roll out cookie dough. For eyes, use largest round Cut-Out from rounds Cut-Outs fondant cutters to cut four cookies. For legs, use pattern and knife to cut one cookie. Bake and cool cookies.

Step 3

Decorate eye cookies. Tint portions of reserved white royal icing orange, black and light kelly green. Thin remaining white icing. Position eye cookies on cooling grid over parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Cover cookies with thinned white icing. Let dry 24 hours.

Step 4

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Complete eye cookies. Place cookies on parchment paper. Use tip 3 and full-strength black icing to pipe dot pupils. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Use tip 3 and full-strength orange icing to pipe in iris. Pat smooth. Use tip 6 and reserved light green icing to pipe outline eyelid. Immediately insert seven or eight eyelashes per cookie, curving left for two cookies and right for two cookies. Let dry 4 hours. Melt white Candy Melts candy according to package directions. Use melted candy in cut disposable bag to attach two eye cookies with opposite-curving eyelashes to yellow candy sticks. Chill until firm, 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 5

Bake and cool ballerina bear cake. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Place cake on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit. Use knife to trim bow, dress and ear areas level.

Step 6

Ice areas smooth. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions orange, kelly green (for dark green), lemon yellow, leaf green/lemon yellow combination (for light green) and black. Reserve remaining white.

Use spatula and orange icing to ice cake sides, background areas and legs smooth.

Step 7

Decorate legs.Position leg cookies. Use marshmallows to support feet. Use tip 16 and black buttercream icing to pipe star spots, 3/4 in. dia. Use tip 16 and kelly green icing to fill in areas around spots with stars. Use tip 16 and black icing to pipe pull-out star toenails.

Step 8

Decorate cake. Use spatula and black buttercream icing to ice mouth area smooth. Use tip 3 and white icing to pipe in teeth. Pat smooth. Use tip 3 and black icing to pipe dot nostrils. Use tip 16 and dark green icing to cover head with stars.

For shirt, use tip 16 and yellow and light green icing to fill in alternating color stripes, 1 in. wide, with stars.

Step 9

DAY OF CELEBRATION

Assemble cake. Insert eye cookies on candy sticks in top of cake. Use marshmallows to support cookies. Use buttercream icing to attach remaining eye cookies in hand areas.
