Our Stand-Up Cuddly Bear Pan provides the foundation for building all types of creatures, including this cute-as-can-be bumblebee. Use our pattern to create perfect-fit fondant wings and add a festive hat crafted from a sugar cone and fondant.

Step 1

In advance: Make wings. Also: Make hat. Cut 1 in. off bottom of sugar cone. Tint 4 oz. fondant green, roll out 1/8 in. thick. Lightly brush cone with piping gel and cover with fondant. For fringe, tint 4 oz. fondant violet, roll out 1/8 in. thick and cut 1 x 1 3/8 in. wide strips; cut 1/8 in. wide slits, 3/4 in. deep. Roll into small tufts, fluff with fingers. Attach to bottom of hat with damp brush; repeat to cover entire edge. For pompom, cut fondant strips 3/4 in. wide x 1 in. long; cut 1/8 in. slits, shape and attach to hat with damp brush. Attach star sprinkles to hat with dots of icing. Let dry on waxed paper-covered cake circles.

Step 2

And: Make fondant arms, hands, legs, feet, antennae and birthday cake. Tint 10 oz. fondant black. Shape 2 1/4 x 2 x 1/2 in. thick feet and 1 1/2 x 2 x 1/2 in. thick hands. Roll 1 in. ball for each antenna. Cut 4 wooden dowel rods to 5 in. for arms and legs. Roll out remaining black fondant 1/8 in. thick. Brush dowel rods with piping gel and cover each with fondant; smooth at seams. For antennae stems, bend lollipop sticks slightly. Dilute black icing color with water and brush on sticks; let dry. Make fondant birthday cake.

Step 3

Prepare cake using firm-textured batter such as pound cake. Fill prepared pan, bake without core at 325ºF for 90 minutes. Cool completely. Position cake on prepared board. Trim off ears, feet, arms and muzzle. Lightly ice cake. Use toothpick to trace face outline and mark 1 in. wide stripes on body. Pipe tip 3 outline mouth and dot eyes, tip 5 dot nose (smooth nose and eyes with finger dipped in cornstarch). Cover head and body with tip 16 stars. Overpipe cheeks with tip 16 stars. Insert prepared dowel rods 1/2 in. deep in hands and feet; secure with icing. Insert other end 2 1/2 in. deep in cake. Insert prepared lollipop sticks into antenna balls, then into cake. Insert wings, large side up, into back of cake. Insert plain lollipop stick into head to support hat; position hat; position birthday cake.

Combine Lemon Yellow with Golden Yellow for yellow shown. Combine Violet with Rose for violet shade shown.
