Halloween Homebodies Cake

It’s got something to make everyone feel at home, sort of! Tombstone cupcakes, black color flow haunted house and a 2-layer cake trimmed with wrought iron fences and flying bats. Home, Scary, Home!

Difficulty: Medium

Step 1

At least 2 days in advance: Make color flow house. Tape pattern to a cake board and cover with waxed paper. For easy release, spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray, wipe with tissue leaving minimal residue. Outline all areas using tip 2 and full-strength color flow. Flow in using thinned color flow in cut parchment bag. Let dry. Cover top 2 in. of 2 Lollipop Sticks with full-strength color flow. Attach sticks to back of house leaving 2 in. extended at bottom. Let dry.

Step 2

Also: Mold 12 candy tombstones in cookie pan. Use painting method to add black details; let set. Fill cavities half full; chill until firm and unmold.

Step 3

And: Cover base board. Prepare Chocolate Fondant and tint black. Cut 3 cake circles to 11 in. diameter and tape together. Cover with fondant rolled 1/8 in. thick. Reserve remaining black fondant.

Step 4

Bake and cool 1-layer 6 in. cake, 2-layer 8 in. cake (trim each layer to 1 1/2 in. for a 3 in. high cake) and 2-layer 10 in. cake (4 in. high). Tint 54 oz. fondant orange. Prepare cakes for Stacked Construction and cover with rolled fondant. Stack cakes.

Step 5

Using patterns and toothpick, mark fence around 8 in. cake and bats/crows/scrolls around 10 in. cake. Using tip 3 and buttercream, outline fence; outline and fill in bats and crows (pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch). Pipe tip 3 violet scrolls. Pipe tip 5 bead bottom borders on all cakes. Bake and cool cupcakes; ice smooth and add sprinkles. Attach tombstones with icing. Position around cake. Insert house in cake top.

*Combine Violet with Rose for violet shown.
