Cake serves 12.
Bake cake using firm batter such as pound cake. Remove from pan and let cool on rack. Ice cake smooth with buttercream.
Roll two 1 1/2 in. fondant balls for eyes, place on cake. Color a 5/8 in. ball of fondant green. Cut ball in half and flatten to use for irises; attach with damp brush. Roll a 3/8 in. ball of fondant black, cut ball in half and flatten to make pupils; attach with damp brush. Roll fondant 1/8 in. thick and cut strips of white fondant 3/4 in. to 1 in. wide. Place strips on cake. Crisscross pieces and attach with damp brush. Dust edges of strips with brush dipped in brown chalk dust.
To make spider, roll black fondant 3/8 in. long for body, 1/4 in. ball for head and each leg is 1/4 in. long x 1/16 in. across. Attach with damp brush.
