A New Wave to Birthday Cake

A funky way to say, “Happy Birthday” really shapes up with Sugar Sheets! and Wilton tools.

Instructions:

Step 1

Bake and cool cake. Position on foil-wrapped cake board. Ice smooth with buttercream.

Step 2

Using Rotary Cutter, cut three strips, 6 in. long x 2 3/4 in. wide, from Bright Yellow Sugar Sheets! Cut them diagonally so they fit like a pattern, and attach to the left side of the cake with piping gel.

Step 3

Using border punch with Waves Border Cutting Insert, cut two waves, one 8 in. long and the other 7 in. long, from the short end of Bright Pink Sugar Sheets! On longer strip, trim to 1 3/8 in. wide and punch waves on opposite side. Repeat with second strip.

Step 4

Attach both waves next to the yellow strips, overlapping slightly. Cut to fit length of cake and attach with piping gel.

Step 5

For the cake stand, use Rotary Cutter to cut a base, 2 1/2 in. long x 7/8 in. wide, and centerpiece, 3 in. long x 3/8 in. wide, from Black Sugar Sheets. Attach to cake with piping gel, 1 in. from edge of cake.

Step 6

Cake pattern: Cut four different size tiers using Rotary Cutter. For the bottom, cut rectangle, 6 in. long x 2 1/4 in. wide, from the Purple Sugar Sheets! For the second tier, cut rectangle, 5 in. long x 2 1/4 in. wide, from Bright Pink Sugar Sheets! For third tier, cut rectangle, 4 in. long x 2 1/4 in. wide, from Bright Blue Sugar Sheets! For top tier, cut rectangle, 3 in. long x 2 1/4 in. wide, from Red Sugar Sheets!

Step 7

Attach tiers to cake with piping gel before adding details.

Step 8

For bottom tier, use punch with Waves Border Cutting Insert to punch out waves from Bright Yellow Sugar Sheets! Trim to 5/8 in. wide and punch waves on opposite side. Trim to fit tier and attach using piping gel.

Step 9

For second tier, use Rotary Cutter to cut three strips, 5 in. long x 3/8 in. wide, from Red Sugar Sheets! Assemble horizontally on rectangle, trimming to fit. Attach using piping gel.

Step 10

For third tier, use narrow end of tip 2A to cut seven circles from Bright Yellow Sugar Sheets! Attach randomly to tier using piping gel.

Step 11

For top tier, use Rotary Cutter to cut five strips, 2 1/4 in. long x 3/8 in. wide, from Bright Pink Sugar Sheets! Assemble vertically on tier, trimming to fit. Attach using piping gel.

Step 12

For the bows, use punch with Oval Cutting Insert to cut three ovals from Bright Green Sugar Sheets! Using a knife, cut out the center of each oval to create loop. Attach to cake with piping gel.

Step 13

For the name, use letters from cutter set and black FoodWriter to trace outline on the back side of Red Sugar Sheets! Cut out and attach over yellow portion of cake using piping gel.

Step 14

For the bottom border, use Rotary Cutter to cut strips, 3/4 in. wide, from Red Sugar Sheets! Attach to cake sides; trim to fit if necessary. Using the narrow end of tip 1A, cut out 56 circles from Bright Yellow Sugar Sheets! Attach to border 3/8 in. a part using piping gel.
