Make snowmen heads one day in advance. Tint white fondant 4 oz. red, 4 oz. green, 1/2 oz. orange and 1/2 oz. black. Reserve remaining white fondant.
Use 9 oz. white fondant and roll 13 balls, 1 in. dia., for heads.
For hats, roll six red fondant and seven green fondant balls, separately, 3/4 in. dia. Shape into hats. Use white fondant and roll 13 fondant balls, 3/8 in. dia., for pom-poms. Use damp brush to attach pom-poms to ends of hats and then attach hats to heads.
For facial features, use black fondant to roll very thin logs 3/4 in. long. Shape into smiles. Roll balls, 1/8 in., for eyes, Use damp brush to attach mouths and eyes. Use orange fondant and shape cones, 1/4 in. long. Use damp brush to attach. Let set overnight.
Make cupcakes. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool cupcakes.
Decorate cupcakes. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Use spatula to ice tops of cupcakes slightly mounded and use spatula to ice top of cupcakes smooth.
Use tip 5 and icing to pipe trim on hats. Position heads on cupcakes. Use tip 12 and icing to pipe arms.
For buttons, use black fondant and roll dots, 3/16 in. dia. Position in icing.
