I was wondering what the shelf life of gel/paste icing colors are since there is no expiration date on it? The reason I ask I had 3 black Wilton jars and they got a horrible odor/taste when used. I really don't think I had them that long. May have been a bad batch of gel/paste from factory. Anyone else had this problem?

Mine get very gloopy sometimes but I just have to put in some clear vanilla extract and they are fine. I have heard of having colors past down from mother to daughter and they are still good. Some people even prefer the old ones to the brand new ones!!

Black and red food coloring can have a bitter taste. Is your coloring spoiled? Couldn't say. Did you ever stick a dirty toothpick in or get icing inside the containers?

My icing jar philosophy: "If in doubt, throw it out." However, if you think it's okay, I add glycerin to restore it's former consistency.
