How do I go about making the top of a cupcake really smooth?

I tried making homemade buttercream, putting it in the microwave and then dipping the cupcakes into it, but it didn't turn out well at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just like you would your cakes....let the buttercream icing crust over, then take a viva paper towel and gently rub your hand over each cupcake.

You could use wax paper or parchment paper instead of Viva.

I pipe it on with a #10 tip, let it crust, then smooth with Viva (or parchment)
Hope this helps......

Think of it as a mini cake which essentially it is. Take your offset mini spatula and turn it as if it was on a turntable. Get your icing as smooth as you can with the spatula. Let it crust. Go over it with the Viva or a piece of typing paper or printer paper.
