No. Buttercream is made with powdered sugar. You may be able to find a frosting recipe that uses granulated sugar, but it won't be American buttercream, aka decorator buttercream.

Why do you ask? Do you live somewhere it is difficult to obtain powdered sugar?

why yes I have and it is terrific!

Cook on med heat 1 cup milk with 3 tbls cornstarch...until thick. Cover with saran wrap by pressing onto top so it does not form a skin and chill.

Beat 1 stick margarine with 1/3 cup white crisco
Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar
Add cold milk mixture
beat about 10 mins and then add flavorings
(I like 1 tsp almond extract, but you can add vanilla, butter flavor, whatever)

Swiss buttercream is also made with granulated sugar. You can find different recipes online.
