I need EVERYONE'S help. I have no idea how to post a picture so if you don't mind, please refer to Colette Peters' website. There is a picture of a wedding cake that is made of small cakes made up to resemble little white packages with red ribbon and bow on them and then stacked randomly. I have a bride that wants this cake for a December wedding so I have a few weeks to practice. At first she wanted all styrofoam (WHEW!) because it was just going to be for looks, but she changed her mind and wants it all real cake. (YIKES).

Here's where I need the help. I have already bought the cake pans for the small cakes and I have worked quite a bit with fondant... BUT, HOW TO STACK? That's another matter. I assume that it is constructed basically with (numerous?) dowels and probably some "gluing" together with royal icing but the weight is my concern. PLEASE HELP!!! HOW EXACTLY WOULD YOU CONSTRUCT THIS CAKE.

Also, I would like to use the marshmallow fondant. So Bunnywoman, if you're reading this, would this work?

This is EXTREMELY important to me to get this cake stacked correctly so that there are no mishaps. The bride lives out of town and called numerous bakeries and decorators and NOBODY would even touch this cake design. I THINK I MAY BE OUT OF MY LEAGUE RIGHT NOW BUT I CAN'T DISAPPOINT THIS CUTE BRIDE.

Thanks EVERYONE for all the advice and ideas presented on this forum. I have learned SO MUCH. Karen

You are so lucky-I would love to do a cake like this one!! The cakes themselves really should not weigh that much. Being individual I would think it wouldn't get that heavy. All of them rest at different points and are at different levels. I think that this will be one of those assemble and know that some how it will work. As far as doweling there has to be a better way. On the bottom you could construct a small two - three tier stand. Small enough to not be seen and hold a bit of weight. The top 5-7 cakes can just rest on top of one another without mishap. I would arrange to cover the boards and use a little royal for extra support.
I know that I can see the vision but is real hard to describe. Basically a custom made center post stand. If built you could leave enough space to look like they are resting on one another. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your suggestions. It never occurred to me to e-mail Colette Peters and ask, but I did just that. And she (or her staff) answered the very next day. Anyway, she does have the instructions for the cake in question in one of her books. Of course, it's the book I DON'T have but I went to the library last night and got the instructions. Doesn't appear that it's going to be that hard after all. BUT I am still going to do a practice cake. Thanks again for your responses fellow decorators.
