I'm new at cake decorating and will eventually start my own cake decorating business. I was wondering what the best way to start this business would be? How would I get my clientele, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Make a dummy cake or two and participate in a few bridal shows. The fees for the shows can be expensive, but it can get you a lot of business. Make sure you bring samples for the brides to taste.

When just starting out, word-of-mouth is the best. Also, take pictures of all of your work and build a portfolio. If you are going to do a business from home, the dept. of agriculture is who you will need to be licensed by.

Thanks for your responses. I was thinking about decorating cakes for close friends/family and just charging for the ingredients to start. That way people will be able to see my work. The only reason I'm weary of this is because I don't want people to come to expect this.

I don't know about where you live, but here in East Texas once you start seriously decorating from home and start advertising you better have applied for a license and assumed name and realize that in doing this you are allowing the health department to come in and inspect your home/kitchen anytime they want. Hope this gives you some help because I am also in the same boat. Thanks. Tara

I have started a business and have been to one bridal show, but the show was not very successful. Another vendor at the show told us this was not the best time of the year for a bridal show and we should wait until January of Februay to go to another show. What is your opinion on this? cgartpro@rev.net

Business license and taxes aside, I gave away several cakes while "practicing." Next thing I knew orders were pouring in.

While practicing I made every type of cake imaginable, even a 2 tier wedding cake. I made sure I took pictures from several angles of each cake for my portfolio. I then gave that cake away. Give them to clubs, groups, places where people congregate. I gave a few to neighbors and it has paid off. But my best use of finding homes for practice cakes was my local Police department. I happen to be married to a police officer and sent cakes to briefings. I have gotten so many orders from that, including from people who work in the office.

Not everyone has that hook-up, but I even got an order from the boy scouts by dropping off a few cakes to meetings. Just make sure you know someone... so they know you aren't a terrorist type person. Garden clubs, businesses where people would eat in the break room or where you know they meetings with snacks. Lots of ideas for you to get ticking away.

Good Luck!

I agree about winter being better for shows. I've been to many, as a spectator, but they've always been much more crowded in January and February.

Good Luck!

A friend of mine told me the best way to get your cakes sold for weddings is to give free cakes/samples and pictures to wedding consultants and coordinators. Their recommendations are invaulable!

Tara,

I also live in East Texas, and don't really know how to get my license for decorating cakes. But want to do it the legal way. Are the license free or do you have to pay a fee?

I too am thinking about a business. However, I worry that I don't have enough time to do it all. I want to start slowly as I'm a busy at home mom to five kids. The oldest graduates next year and as the others get older, I'd like to have something to keep me busy that I enjoy. I plan to start by giving away practice cakes and cookies at school parties and my husbands business associates. Maybe some cookies for the nurses next time we head to the pediatrician.

I'm in Central Texas and if anyone can help with legal license, etc., I'd appreciate it.

I had planned to make cookies for all the kids at tennis camp at the end of this week - our last week. I've made them for coaches and gophers and they loved them. That would be 150 cookies ... 5 recipes of dough ... how many lbs of sugar ... many hours?? I eventually dropped the idea worrying about my liability should any of the kids have allergies. Does anybody know the laws regarding a kid getting sick from my cookie?

sevenschucks@verizion.net thanks for any all help becky

I want to start my own business as well, but I am afraid would not want to pay full price. Right now I only charge for ingredients, but I am cheating myself. So, if anyone can give insightlful help, that would be greatly appreciated.

I have been thinking about going to new family restaurants and asking to leave samples there. If I do this, will I need a license? How can I protect myself?

Hello,
I am new to this forum. I am in Illinois and I am interested in starting a cake decorating business from my home. I really don't know where I would even begin doing this! I am self taught and really quite good at it. I used the wilton books and this website to learn techniques. I took photos of some of the cakes I have done into our local bakery and they are interested in giving me a job doing their decorating, but I would prefer doing it on my own if possible. Any information at all would be appreciated. Thank you. My email is hisgirl777@hotmail.com
