Topic: How to Color Gum Paste flowers Gold?
elenaboudreau 06/25/2012 6:40 AM
I am doing a 50th anniversary cake. I have made all my flowers white. What is the best way to color the gold? Does anyone hava any good suggestions? I have bought the gold shimmer dust, but was wondering whether I should dry paint them or do a wet paint.

Since you've made them using white gp, you will need to either dust or paint. Each will provide a different effect. Try dusting them a deep yellow first, then add gold, might take less dust that way. Then steam the flower to set the color. To steam, just have a small pot of simmering water on yoru stove and hold the flower over the steam. Only takes 5-10 seconds. Don't hold too close as you don't want water spots to form.

Then paint one gold.

Compare the two. Use the one you like best.

Painting will give you more of a gilded color, dusting will give you more of a straight gold color.

Not sure how it works on gumpaste items, but Wilton now has Silver and Gold edible spray color. Might be worth checking out.

The Spray color works great on GP flowers. I used the gold on roses before.
