Topic: Help with cake decorating

My son wants a "Lego" themed birthday cake. I was able to purchase a mini fig cake mould. Being that this is my first cake and decoration, what should I do? I baked the cake, leveled it, used store bought "frosting" and the cake does does not come out smooth. I'm trying to have the smooth effect of a store bought cake (i know, too ambitous). Could you please send some advice on what type of store bought icing would work to get a smooth "iced" cake?

I find that store bought frosting is either stiff and needs to be whipped further or too soft and needs to have more conf. sugar added to stiffen. In any case to get smoothness take a cup of really hot water. dip frosting knife in it to heat, tap excess water off and smooth frosting. Make sure knife is not too wet as it will break down the frosting. Also, most store bakeries will sell you there frosting for home use. Good luck!
