Fondant Cut-Outs?


A simple way to add color and visual interest to a cake. Cutouts are fondant shapes that can be made in a variety of sizes and colors.

On Roll-N-Cut Mat or clean surface, knead rolled fondant to make it pliable. Using Fondant Roller, roll out fondant to 1/8 to 1/16 in. thick, or thickness required by your project.

Cut out desired shape, pressing your cutter evenly through the fondant.

Step 3

Remove cutter and any excess fondant around the edges of the shape. Slide spatula under fondant and lift. Smooth any rough cut edges by patting with your finger.

For overlays, cut out desired shapes, using different size cutters, as directed above. Attach smaller shape to larger one with a damp brush (dip in water, then blot on paper towel) .

Hints:

To attach the fondant piece to a fondant covered cake, either brush the back lightly with a damp brush (dip in water, then blot on paper towel), thinned fondant adhesive or piping gel.

To attach the fondant piece to a buttercream icing covered cake, press fondant piece onto a freshly iced cake. If the buttercream has crusted, use dots of icing to adhere the fondant piece to the cake surface.

The 9 in. Fondant Roller is perfect for rolling out smaller pieces of fondant. For larger pieces, use the 20 in. Fondant Roller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have a huge collection of cookie cutters. So I am never at a loss for ideas for fondant cut-outs. It doesn't matter what the season or occasion is this technique will work. Instead of using cornstarch, I use a shaker can of powdered sugar, to prevent sticking. Also a thin layer of shortening on the roll-out mat helps. You can also either dip your cutters in powdered sugar or line the edge with shortening if you have trouble with sticking. For a professional look I have had an edible image made at my local baking supply store. Apply it to a piece of fondant, cut out around the main image, and let dry. It produces a great looking topper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fondant cut outs help make the cake! Once you get the technique of handling/rolling fondant, they are easy. First time you try this, give yourself some extra time. It's not hard but not necessarily easy the first time either. After the first time though, you'll be amazed at how easy and how creative you can be. I used cutouts to make the letters and animals on a baby block cake for a baby shower. It was adorable and everyone loved it! I let them dry some and then used Wilton color markers to put in the details. Be sure to read up on flavoring the fondant. If done well, you can get an almost Necco Wafer effect for your decorations. Easy, tasty and impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using cut outs is really as simple as rolling out fondant like dough and cutting it with the cutters. The hardest part is getting your cutout to stick to the side of a cake, but the thinned fondant adhesive the Wilton suggests is really good. I like cutting circles and then cutting smaller circles out of the cutouts so I'm left with lipsided circle "frames"--they look really cute and fun, and you could cut them in any color for just about any occasion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recently did a baby shower cake for my step-daughter. She wanted something simple and wanted to help. So we colored the fondant with "boy" colors and cut out different sizes of dots, then placed them all over the cake. It was frosted with chocolate buttercream, so the colors really stood out and it was easy and fun. I did a gumpaste baby and we covered him with a blanket using the marbelized fondant technique. This was definitely easy and fun..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are really fast to do and great with all the Wilton cookie cutters. I always use a 50/50 corn starch/powdered sugar mix to dust my work surface. It doesn't dry out the fondant as quickly as it does with 100% corn starch. Also, I always use my small, tapered, offset spatula to pick up the cut-outs. I've found that I minimalize the distortion with this spatula because of its fine edge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I made a royal icing covered cake and used different colored Wilton blossom cut outs to decorate it and make it a little bit more special. It turned out great with the additions of the blossoms, they were easy to use, clean and maintain. I always look for the Wilton brand, because i know that they are excellent value for money, will last and do the job!

Circle cut-outs of 3 different colors and sizes look great on a white fondant background. I even use marbled colored fondant in shapes of shooting stars laid on a butter cream cake and gave it a cute effect that was very easy to create.

I always let them air dry for a few min before picking them up and using them so I don't ruin the perfect circle shape, also when I add circle above the sides of cake where there's so support but the bottom, it's best to let them dry
