Step 1

1 DAY IN ADVANCE

Bake and cool crown cake and eight cupcakes. Cake is one layer, 2 in. high. Place cake on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit.

Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions light and dark kelly green, black, light and dark brown and lemon yellow/golden yellow combination (for yellow).

Use spatula and light green icing to ice cake top and sides and five cupcake tops smooth. While icing is still moist on cake, sprinkle brown sugar over brim area of crown.

Step 2

Make five trees. For three large trees, use spatula and green icing to stack two sugar cones together. For two small trees, use single cones. Position cones on five cupcake tops; reserve remaining three cupcakes.

Starting at bottom of cone, use tip 18 and dark green icing to cover cones with pull-out star branches.

Step 3

Make five fondant heads and sleeping bags. For heads, use natural, dark brown and light brown from natural colors fondant multi pack to roll 11/2 oz. balls. Mix colors together if desired to create various skin tones. Flatten to make round disks, 2 1/4 in. dia.

For sleeping bags, use red, green, yellow and blue from primary colors fondant multi pack to shape flattened logs as follows: For blue bag, use 2 3/4 oz. fondant for a log, 2 in. wide x 4 1/2 in. long. For red bag, use 2 1/2 oz. fondant for a log, 2 in. wide x 5 1/4 in. long. For yellow bag, use 3 3/4 oz. fondant for a log, 2 in. wide x 5 3/4 in. long. For green bag, add a little black icing color to 3 oz. green fondant. Make a log, 2 in. wide x 5 in. long. For purple bag, combine remaining red and blue fondant. Use 2 1/8 oz. fondant to make a log, 2 in. wide x 4 in. long.

Use knife to cut a curve in top of log to conform to head. Use various tools from 10-pc. gum paste/fondant tool set to imprint bags with texture.

Step 4

Make fondant dog. For body, use dark brown fondant to shape a log, 3/4 in. wide x 2 in. long. Curve slightly. Shape and flatten one ball, 1/2 in. dia., for front leg and one ball, 5/8 in. dia. for back leg. Use damp brush to attach legs to body. For head, roll a ball, 3/4 in. dia. Shape tapered snout and flatten back; attach to body. For tail, roll a tapered log, 1/4 in. dia. x 2 in. long; attach. Shape small balls of black fondant for nose and ears and attach. Use tip 1 and black icing to pipe outline eyes.

Step 5

Assemble cake. Position a head at each point of crown on cake. Position sleeping bags, overlapping slightly. Use tip 1 and black icing to pipe facial features. Use tips 2 and 3 and desired color icings to pipe outline and pull-out hair. Position dog.

Step 6

Decorate cupcake campfire. Place three remaining cupcakes together on foil-wrapped board, cut to fit. Use spatula and light green icing to ice tops together, filling in center and any gaps. Use 9 in. fondant roller to roll out orange, yellow and red spice drops on surface sprinkled with granulated sugar. Use leaves Cut-Outs fondant cutters to cut medium and small flames in various colors. Position dipping pretzel sticks on cupcake tops for firewood. Insert flames between sticks. Position campfire below cake and trees above cake.
