Step 1

2 Days in Advance

Prepare base board. Tint 36 oz. fondant leaf green/lemon yellow combination (for green). Prepare and cover 12.5 in. wide x 16 in. long foamcore board with green fondant.

Step 2

Make fondant butterfly and flowers. Tint 3 oz. white fondant light golden yellow (for fantasy flowers), a 1/2 oz. fondant ball light violet/rose combination (for light violet flower centers), 2 oz. light rose/ violet combination (for light rose leaves, name and teardrops around name), a 1/2 in. ball dark violet/rose combination (for dark violet flowers), a 1/2 in. ball of rose/violet combination (for magenta stem) and a 1/2 in. ball leaf green/lemon yellow combination (for green teardrops around name). Reserve remaining 1 1/2 oz. white. Add 1/4 teaspoon Gum-Tex each to yellow, light rose and light violet fondant. Cover fondant until needed.

For butterflies, use 9 in. fondant roller with purple guide rings to roll out white fondant 1/8 in. thick. Use pattern and knife to cut four butterflies. For flower stem, use magenta fondant to roll a log, 1/4 in. dia. x 3 in. long. Curve slightly. Let dry on cornstarch- dusted board.

For fantasy wild roses, roll out yellow fondant, 1/16 in. thick. Cut bottom and top petal layers for large wild roses. Use 9 in. fondant roller with pink guide rings to roll out fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use large rose cutter from gum paste flower cutter set to cut two petal shapes for bottom layer. Use small rose cutter from set to cut two petal shapes for top layer.

For leaves, roll out light rose fondant1/16 in. thick. Use large rose leaf cutter from gum paste flower cutter set to cut two leaves. Use small veining tool to score vein lines in leaves. Let dry in curves of wave flower former set.

For small flowers, roll out dark violet and remaining yellow fondant1/32 in. thick. Use large ejector from gum paste flower cutter set to cut two violet flowers and small ejector from set to cut two yellow flowers. Use impression strip from set to imprint. Let dry 4 hours in small flower forming cups.

Reserve remaining fondant.

Step 3

1 Day in Advance

Complete flowers. Prepare thinned fondant adhesive following recipe directions. For yellow fantasy wild roses, use adhesive to attach two sets of petals together, staggering individual petals. Use reserved dark violet fondant to roll four balls, 3/16 in. dia., for each flower center. Use adhesive to attach. For small flowers, use yellow fondant to roll balls, 1/8 in. dia. Attach to centers.

Step 4

Make fondant message. Roll out reserved light rose fondant 1/8 in. thick. Use knife and desired font pattern to cut letters needed. Let dry 24 hours on cornstarch- dusted board.

Step 5

Make teardrops. Use 9 in. fondant roller with pink guide rings to roll out light rose and green fondant 1/16 in. thick. Use knife to cut four green and eight rose teardrops, 7/8 in. long x 7/16 in. wide at widest point. Place under storage board flap.

Step 6

Bake and cool Dora the Explorer cake. Position cake on foil-wrapped cake board, cut to fit.

Step 7

Decorate cake. Prepare buttercream icing following recipe directions. Tint portions black, copper/orange/brown combination (for skin tone), brown/red-red combination (for dark brown), brown/ red-red combination (for light brown), rose/ violet/black combination (light and dark rose shirt and outline), and leaf green/lemon yellow combination (for green). Reserve remaining white.

Use spatula and green icing to ice cake sides and background areas smooth. Use tip 3 and white icing to pipe in eyes. Pat smooth with finger dipped in cornstarch. Use tip 3 and light brown icing to outline eye and pipe in iris. Pat smooth. Use tip 2 and black icing to pipe in dot pupil. Pat smooth. Use tip 2 and white icing to pipe dot eye highlights. Use tip 3 and light brown icing to outline arms, hair and facial features. Use tip 3 and black icing to pipe in underside of hair. Pat smooth. Use tip 3 and dark rose icing to outline shirt and cuffs. Use tip 3 and dark rose icing to pipe in cuffs and waistband. Pat smooth. Use tip 2 and light rose icing to pipe scallops and dots on waistband and cuffs. Use tip 16 and icing to cover areas with stars: skin tone face and arms, brown hair, rose shirt front and white sleeves.

Step 8

Day of Celebration

Complete cake. Position decorated cake on prepared base board. Use tip 3 and green icing to pipe bead bottom border. Use damp brush to attach butterflies, all flowers, letters and teardrop accents around letters. Use tip 3 and light rose icing to outline butterflies and pipe wing details and antennae.
