I love the excitement of a child’s birthday! They want to tell their little friends all about the party they have planned. My friend has a backyard tent sleepover party planned for her daughter’s birthday. When I asked her daughter what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday, she replied fire and S’mores. For those of you who have never heard of S’mores, they are a tasty combination of graham crackers, chocolate bar, and roasted marshmallows.
So, I got to thinking, what kind of cake could I make with those items?! I also knew that she loves to read, she likes the color blue, and the girls would be decorating flip flops at the party. I came up with this…

After baking, cooling, and leveling the cake, I iced it with Decorator Icing. To cover the cake, I started with white fondant and added leaf green icing color to it.
I sprinkled confectioner’s sugar on my counter top and used my rolling pin to roll out the fondant. I then placed the fondant over my cake and used the Fondant Smoother to cover my cake and cut off the excess fondant.
For the S’mores border, I cut graham crackers into bite size pieces and repeated the same with chocolate bars. I then placed those together on a paper plate and took another graham cracker and put a miniature marshmallow on it. I then put my plate in the microwave for under 10 seconds to slightly melt the chocolate and marshmallows. I removed them from the microwave and sandwiched them together.
This was now the border for the bottom of my cake. Some are flat against the cake, and others are sideways against the cake. I used Decorator Icing to attach them to the cake.
I also used white fondant to make planks and used a toothpick to poke dots to form a Camp Sign. I ran the veining tool from the Fondant/Gum Paste Tool Set across the sign to create a wood grain. I then used the brown icing color with a decorator brush dipped in water to paint on the color.

I made the tent out of fondant that I combined with royal blue icing color and rolled it into a rectangle and then let it harden on a graham cracker box. At that time, I took extra fondant and rolled out another smaller rectangle and folded that over to make the sleeping bag. I used the veining tool to make grooves on the sleeping bag.
I molded the camper’s head out of fondant colored with ivory icing color and used lemon yellow icing color for the hair. Using the Tool Set and a toothpick, I made a face and indents for the hair.
“Emily” and “10” were made by mixing fondant and violet icing color and then cutting them out using the Alphabet & Number Cut-Outs™. I also made flip flops from that violet fondant and a book using white and black fondant.
To make the tree, I covered a sugar cone with leaf green icing color using decorating tip 18.
Using Sugar Sheets and the Flower Chain Border Cutting Insert in the Border Punch Set, I punched out some of the flower borders. I then cut those apart with the Rotary Cutter. Using my decorator brush, I used Piping Gel to attach Spring Confetti Sprinkles to the centers of my flowers. I also used the Piping Gel to attach my letters to the tent and the flowers around the cake.

Now was the time to put everything together. I used dark chocolate covered raisins and chocolate decorator icing to form a circle. I cut pretzel sticks and used the chocolate icing to attach those to my cake. I used crushed graham crackers to form crumbs and sprinkled those around my fire pit. I added the yellow and orange candles from the Hot Colors Round Candles and pushed those in the fire pit area so when the candles are lit, there would be a fire. I added extra miniature marshmallows on toothpicks for roasting.

I used extra green Decorator Icing to attach the tent to the cake and the tree. At first I first put the girl in the sleeping bag in the tent, but then decided I preferred her out from under the tent. I attached her with white Decorator Icing.
I think the birthday girl, who is also a Girl Scout, will enjoy her cake and be thrilled that I was able to work her suggestions into one cake!
