More Design Ideas Using Fondant Imprint Mats

September 14th, 2010 by Susan Matusiak

Fondant Imprint Mats are great tools for imprinting beautiful patterns on your cakes. Don’t let the name fool you. The mats can also be used with melted candy to create a unique covering for your cakes. Our latest videos will show you how easy it is to use the imprint mat with fondant and how to make a candy plaque.

How have you used the fondant imprint mats? For more tips on how to dress up your cakes, see our previous blog post “Make a Great Impression with Fondant Imprint Mats.”

  5. Hello, my question is, how you add color to an imprint mat? for example the pillow cake? the print flowers one color or the cake white an desing diferent color? thank you!!!!

    • Susan Matusiak says:

You can color the flowers with pearl dust or paint them with pearl dust and lemon extract. ALso you pipe icing with a tip 2 to fill in the area.

I would also like to know how did they do that design on the brown and white cake?? is that one of those transfers? or did they use the imprint mat for that?

    • Susan Matusiak says:

The design is from the Floral Fantasy imprint mat and you roll your fondant over the mat and attach to the cake. Then you would decorate the flowers with icing in brown, you can use candy also. The bows need to be done a few days ahead to dry and then decorate the flowers with icing.

Enjoyed your videos. How do we get more instructions on the imprint cakes?

The first time I used imprint mat some of the fondant got stuck on the mat. I then tried using vegetable shortening which helped but made the fondant look shiny. Any better tip?

    • Susan Matusiak says:

I wonder if your fondant was rolled too thin and that is why it stuck to the mat. You need to roll it about 1/4 thick and it will thin out as you roll over the mat. Shortening does cause a bit of a shine, but it should become dull after a while. You can dust with a little powdered sugar.

Hi to all at Wilton team

Thank you so very much for the tutorial videos. I have learned a lot and hope to put into practise my newly aquired knowledge. I wish we could have Wilton decorating classes here in England, perhaps Wilton should consider covering the UK and show us guys just how it’s done! Thanks again.
