Babies are so cute! Adults are always oohing and aahing over those bundles of joy! Especially their little feet! I recently noticed the baby rump cake trend popping up and thought it was a neat idea to create a cake with the illusion of a teeny baby sleeping under a blanket.
I recently volunteered to make a baby shower cake for a friend and decided to try this design on a practice cake. Since it was my first attempt, I was a little concerned about how to actually make the cake. Sometimes my plan seems workable until I actually attempt to make it with food items. I wasn’t totally confident that my ideas were going to match what I actually wanted to do.
I started by making crispy rice treats by following the instructions on the box of cereal. I placed the treats on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. I then lined one of the pan halves from the Sports Ball Pan Set with plastic wrap and packed the treats in the pan and leveled it off.

I then flipped it out, peeled off the plastic wrap, and coated the bump with Decorator Icing to make a smoother surface for my fondant. I then covered it with White Fondant and made two mini banana-shaped pieces to create the legs for my cake. I also coated these with the icing.
Using the Natural Colors Multi-pack Fondant, I mixed some of the Light Brown and Dark Brown fondant to create the skin tone for my baby. It was easy to use! I just kneaded the colors together and rolled them out using confectioner’s sugar and the Perfect Height Rolling Pin. I used my Cutter/Embosser to cut the fondant and cover my pieces. Using my Fondant Smoother, I was able to cover the pieces and make a smooth surface.
I then took more of my treats and worked them into a flat peanut shape with a slightly larger portion at the top to create the feet. I covered them with the icing and fondant again using the fondant smoother to make the feet.

When done, I worked on creating the tiny little toes by rolling pieces of fondant into little balls. Once I created the sizes I wanted, I attached the toes with a brush and water, sort of bending the foot a little and using the veining tool from the Fondant and Gum Paste Set, I pressed in the wrinkles of the bottom of the feet, and propped them up on a butter knife.
I was now ready to start assembling my project. I started with an 8” cake circle and put a dab of icing on the board. I then attached the fondant covered baby bottom and legs on top of the icing to hold them in place.
Using the Fabric Fondant and Gum Paste Mold (the mold has a lot of neat shapes including buttons!), I created two strips using the widest section of the mold by pressing white fondant into the mold. These strips were the elastic leg sections of my diaper. I then laid the strips over the leg/diaper area and pushed them in slightly with my veining tool.
I cut the excess off with my Cutter/Embosser and then lifted the pieces, brushed them with water, and then laid them back down pushing the ends under with the tool. I then attached the feet using more Decorator Icing. It is easy to play around with the feet trying different positions! Don’t you want to just go up and tickle those toes???

Using Yellow Fondant from the Pastel Colors Multi-Pack, I rolled it out with confectioner’s sugar and the Wide Glide Rolling Pin. Using my Cutter/Embosser, I cut out a large square shape of fondant. I then created a diamond pattern on my blanket using the embosser wheel and a ruler. I then used the cutter wheel to make fringe on the blanket by cutting strips and cut the four corners of the blanket and then draped the blanket over the baby.
I lifted and moved the blanket until I was happy with how I had it positioned over the baby. It is easy to use different colors and patterns for the blankets or even use Rubber Ducky Icing Decorations.
After my first rump cake, I was more confident that I had my ideas down pat, that they were workable, and that I was ready to make a second rump cake presentable for a baby shower. My second cake used the pink from the Natural Colors Multi-Pack Fondant for the skin color following the same instructions above.
For the blue baby blanket, I decided to make a larger blanket using the blue fondant from the Pastel Colors Multi-Pack adding a little white and some other blue fondant I had made. I kneaded that, rolled it out and cut a square. Then I used the green fondant from the Pastel Colors Multi-Pack and pressed that in the rick rack section on the Fabric Fondant and Gum Paste Mold and attached that to the blue blanket with water. I used the embosser on this blanket too.
When I put this blanket on the rump, I used my fingers to curl up the corners of the fondant to give the blanket a little detail. I then put that cake on top of a chocolate iced cake decorated with blue and green Sugar Pearls on the sides.
I would cover the cake with fondant in the future, or at least the outline of the cake circle. When I went to remove the rump layer, my chocolate icing stuck to the bottom of the cake circle. Duh! I should have known better!!!

Note: I know some people may not like the idea of cutting into a baby cake, which is why I used the crispy treats. I was able to remove the blanket and take the “cake” apart to serve, or just serve the rounded rump portion. It was easy to serve by breaking up the treats; no cutting required. You can easily put a cake underneath that could be cut and served.
In the case of cakes, little girls are made of sugar and spice and all things nice….

this cake was amazing Paula! It looks great here, but it looked even better in person! This was truly an amazing cake..
Thank you Chandra! These were fun cakes to make!!! I enjoyed making them different and I have even come up with other ideas for future ones!
Although this is really cute, I don’t think it qualifies as a “cake”. It is just a huge rice krispy treat. Where’s the cake?
Hi Carol!
Thank you for replying! For my first attempt, I just did the cake topper. For my second one, I put it on top of a round chocolate cake. The topper can be removed and the cake underneath can be served.
Oh, never mind. It’s underneath. My bad.
This cake sculpture is adorable Paula! Oodles of blanket possibilities!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi Susan!
Thank you for your comments! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I feel there are alot of possibilities for the blanket.
Cute cake but the first one that was your test was made with RKT. Was the 2nd one made with cake???
Thanks
shaz
Hi Shaz!
Thank you for replying! I kept the “rump” section as cereal treats for both, but added a chocolate cake underneath the second project.
these are horrible. they are ugly and its creepy. the very thought of cutting into a baby thats only 1/2 there anyway is sick. i mean seriously hacking into this and eating it? ewww
Hi Becca!
Thank you for replying! I can understand that not everyone will like this. My idea was to cut and serve the chocolate cake underneath and just use the “rump” as a topper.
RUMP ROW – I’ll take a dozen Half or whole it is a cake not a baby.
Pauls – can you also make puppy rumps?
Great idea Paula! My impression was that this was more designed as just a cake topper, not something to actually eat, correct? I’d eat it though, I love rice krispies! Sweet idea and thanks for having the courage to show us!
Jenn
Hi Jenn!
Thanks for your comments! Yes, you totally got what I was trying to achieve with this!!! The “rump” is a cake topper and the round cake underneath is what gets cut and served.
Just to reply to becca’s comment..
you’re not cutting into a baby! No more than if you were cutting into and eating a teddy bear if you had a teddy cake…An entirely unnecessary comment to make when someone has gone to the effort of posting an idea with instructions, in my opinion. A “not too my taste” would have sufficed!
Thanks for posting Paula, I think it’s a really cute idea!
Hi Becky!
Thank so much for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my blog!!!!
We all have our opinions
Absolutely adorable! Thanks for posting this Paula – I can see how this technique could be used for a lot of three dimensional object and not just baby bottoms!
Hi Donna!
Thank you for commenting! Yes, I agree, this technique can be used to make other 3D objects!
This is cute, but when I read it I thought it was gonna be the pregnant belly cake, which I think is cuter. Why whine at someone for not liking it? How would u all feel if u got bitched at for urn opinion?
Hi Amy!
Thank you for replying! I haven’t seen one of the pregnant belly cakes yet. I’ll have to search for one!
@Amy–you mean like you’ve just done with your comment? People are entitled to voice their opinion, the way you’ve clearly stated yours.
That said, I’m not a fan of the “baby rump” trend in cakes at all, but unlike some attempts that I’ve seen I think this was executed very well!
Hi Shelby!
Thank you for commenting! I understand that this cake isn’t for everyone. Thank you for mentioning my cake worked out well.
I LOVE THESE!! It is such a cute fun idea and great technique for a many of diffrent things. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. Now I must go try this…
Hi Heather!
Thanks so much for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my cake!!!
She posted an opinion…her opinion. It was not horribly offensive nor did she use vulger language to voice her opinion. This cake is an “aquired” cake style. It is unique and creative! Personally, I’m not crazy about it either. It’s purely psychological…the concept is creepy to me too. To each their own, no need to knock someone down for a negative opinion OR positive opinion…that’s all it is, an opinion.
Hi Becky!
Thank you for replying!
Hi I just wanted to comment that I have done these a few times and they are so adorable. I used cake in half the ball pan and covered with fondant on top of another cake and they turned out great! I also used rice krispy treats for the feet and twinkies for the legs and covered in fondant. I manipulated the twinkies a bit to make them shape around the rump!
Hi Alycia!
Thank you for your comments! Your techniques sound like they work well too! Thanks for sharing!
I agree im not sure about this cake, it is kind of sweet but a little weird at the same time seeing half a baby LOL. Although looking past that the possibilities are endless for creating elaborate quilted blankets etc, your idea def worked well done for actually getting it to fruition there is nothing worse when you have the idea in your head and it doesnt work the way you anted it too. I dont think I would have this cake at my baby shower but there are many other designs im not partial too either, just a personal preference, such sweet work on the blanket.
Hi Mette!
Thank you for commenting!
I love wilton products, i like ideas the baby, i was en los angeles last may and june, and buy a lot of products store MICHE’L . COLORS and decorations paper . thanks wilton
Hi Julia!
I’m glad to hear you love Wilton products! I do too!!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this cake!! What a cute and creative idea!!! So nice to get away from all the norms of shower cakes with umbrellas and flowers, etc. I’d totally eat this cake – and it doesn’t freak me out any more than eating a picture of my niece or nephew when my sister uses a picture for their birthday cake! In fact, it’s always a fun joke in my house as to who gets to eat the birthday boy/girl’s face!
Hi Josette!
Thank you for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my cake!!!!
I love making these baby rump cakes. I’ve made quite a few for baby showers, and I customize the blanket to go with the theme or the nursery colors. I use a 12″ double layer cake, and then bake a 6″ round cake made in a pyrex bowl. I use rice krispy treats only for the feet and legs. Then cover them w/fondant. I’ve never had anyone say it was horrible to make a baby rump cake. They’re adorable. Keep up the good work!
Hi Cindy!
Thank you for commenting and for sharing your ideas!!!!
I actually agree with Josette… I love the idea of something different for a baby shower… plus I LOVE the idea of using this as a cake topper….. I have seen tier cakes for baby showers and what a cute topper this would be!!! Thank you for this wonderful idea Paula!!!
Hi Sue!
Thank you for your comments! I’m glad you enjoyed my cake topper!
OMG! I am sooooooo happy to see this one! I really have been thinking about trying this. Always love the great tutorials and glad to get a heads up on facebook it has been posted too!
Hi Lesa!
Thank you for replying! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed my blog!

Cake, maybe dats why this cake as wow ??M?????? . Its really no big deal eating

slaughtering the celebrant? Pls,lets be realistic and stop being unnecesssary sentimental.
Good work Paula.
Hi Moji!
Thank you for your comments!
What a wonderful job you did Paula! I think this idea is so cute and creative! Way to go!
Hi Maj!
Thank you for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my cake!!!
love everything about it, except the toes should be smaller, after all it is a little baby, the toes is what caught my attention, looked too big for the feet, then looking again, made the feet look not real, so maybe the toes could be smaller to go with the size of the cute little feet..but other than that loved it..always wondered how you do the baby butt, LOL..now I know..thank you..
Hi Brenda!
Thank you for commenting! Thanks for the advice! The toes may need to be smaller or it may also have been how the photo was taken. I’m glad you enjoyed the blog and now know how to make one yourself!
wish we could post pics. I made this cake for my cousins baby shower a long time ago. I did a few things different and actually got the ideas from past wilton blogs. Insted of using fondant I used the chocolate clay with differnt color wilton candy melts. I used this for the blanket, legs, toes, and a bow to go around the bottom cake ( 2-layer 8” round with baby booty on top). Everyone loved it!
Hi Casey!
Thank you for commenting! Some people like to go into the Forums section on our website! You can usually post pictures there and share what you’ve made. I LOVE to use Candy Clay too!!!
Seriously adorable! What a great idea!
Hi Jennifer!
Thanks so much for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I too have made this cake in several versions…it is a BIG hit here in Hickory, NC! One of my most popular
Ideas are limitless!
Hi Lisa!
I’m glad to hear your cakes went over well! Yes, I think there are tons of different ideas to use on these cakes!
Thank you for commenting!
Because of course everyone wants to eat a chunk of baby feet… or butt. Am I the only one that finds it disturbing to chop up a baby and serve it to the guests?
Nicely done, but the whole concept of baby butt cake(where exactly is the other half of the baby supposed to be anyway?) is just very
odd to me. Pregnant torso cakes are equally bizarre, in my opinion…to each his(or her) own. The quality of work is lovely though, so anyway…
Hi LeeAnn!
Thank you for your comment regarding my work. I’m glad to hear you thought it was “nicely done”. The illusion is that the other half of the cake is under the blanket; like a sleeping baby. I understand that these cakes are not for everyone.
Heh. Don’t look now, but you made Cake Wrecks. Can’t say as I blame them — this is way too much like ritual cannibalism for me!
Oh, for crying out loud. . . .
Sure, ‘it isn’t really a baby’, ‘you aren’t cutting into a cake’, blah, blah, blah.
This is CREEEPY! It’s just as creepy as pregnant belly cakes. Even with the rice krispy treats, you’re still taking apart a sugary facsimile of a baby and *eating* it.
“But it’s just a topper! No one will be eating it!” Then why? Why make a giant rice krispy treat that is never going to be eaten? The fact is that someone is going to make this, in cake or otherwise, take it to a baby shower, and eat it.
Many of us have been waiting patiently for this awful trend to just die already. You. Aren’t. Helping.
Evil Wrecky Henchpeople Unite!!
Sorry, I find the cake looks a little creepy too. It’s not even about “eating a baby” whatever, it’s a cake. It just looks creepy to me.
same with the pregnant belly cakes, just YUCK.
You should totally rig something up to make it poot confectioners sugar. Only then would this be a win in my book.
Fondant placenta for everyone!
All rudeness aside, they’re nicely made; just not for me. I’d much rather ….. Not have cake at all?
Creepy. Very well done which makes the creep factor that much higher. Unless you plan on making it out of red velvet cake with oozy raspberry filling. Then it would just be disturbing.
That is the most dumbest cake I have ever seen! I would be shocked, then laugh out loud if someone made that for me! It looks like the baby fell into a hole and the only thing ‘showing’ is his butt and feet. Completely ridiculous!!
What you really need to do is make sure the cake on the INSIDE is RED VELVET cake. Talk about gross!! LOL!!
I read the entire article. At the end she talks about removing the top. She even mentions that some people are hesitant to cut into a baby-shaped cake. Heck, some people don’t want to cut into teddy bear cakes either. This topper is clearly shown on top of a cake, on a cake board! You remove it. It might not be my style, but I respect her work.
Hi Delores!
Thank you for commenting! You are absolutely correct; everyone has their own opinion on what they like! Thank you for respecting my work.
I love it! I have made many Belly Cakes for Baby Showers and yes some people are squeamish about that too but I say IT’S ONL A CAKE lol and a Novelty nothing more. I made only one of these Rump Cakes and now I’m going to make a Baby Cake with a Chocolate face. Sorry but that was a request from a friend and I love that people ooo and ahhh almost makes you want to pick it up and hold it lol. Anywhozits, I LOVE IT, so adorable.
Hi Conni!
Thank you for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my blog! You are so right; it is only a cake!
I think this is adorable cake topper.
To those who find it disturbing and/or creepy, I say, lighten up…..you know it’s not a real baby!!!!! RELAX and enjoy……if you don’t care for this, move on….no need to share gross thoughts.
This is totally creative idea that is extremely well executed.
Keep up the great work, Paula!
Hi Dee!
I’m glad that you enjoyed my blog!
Thank you so much for commenting and for your kind words!!!
I think this cake is great since the rump is out of RKT and you actually cut into the cake part underneath. Nothing wrong with that, the topper is just an adornment.
I was wondering if you put some coconut underneath the cake board, if that would keep the frosting from sticking to it when you remove it.
HI Runnchic!
Thank you for replying!
Yes, I think your idea of coconut underneath woudl work great!!! I also could have put a round piece of fondant under the cake board and that would have kept it from sticking to the icing. Thanks for the suggestion!
I love these cakes. I think they are adorable! I have a baby shower coming up soon (for my own grandbaby!) and my d.i.l wants me to do one for the shower. My question is, can I use the princess cake pan to make the rump instead of the sports ball?
Hi Willowcry!
Thank you for replying and congratulations Grandma!!!
If you are referring to the Princess Carriage pan, I’m not sure you will get a round enough area to portray the rump.
so cute! i was wondering how much u charge for a cake like this? someone asked me to make one and i’m new to the selling part. i dont want to be unreasonable and at the same time not get taken advantage of.
Hi Jeanette!
Thank you for replying!
Unfortunately, I am unable to tell you how much to charge for the cake. Perhaps you can try an internet search to see what others are charging. Good luck!
I absolutely LOVE this idea as a cake topper. So different and unique. I’m making a BB shower cake this week. The baby arrived early so will be there at the shower which I think is going to make it even cuter. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Tisha!
Thank you for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed my blog!
I bet your cake turned out real nice!
Cute idea, how long did it take you to make one of theses?
Hi!
I don’t remember the exact time it took, but I do believe this was a quicker project, as I used the cereal treats.
Hi!
I’m glad you enjoyed my blog and found what you were looking for!
The Wilton website has lots of useful information in the blogs section and elsewhere. I’m happy you found us!
Happy baking!
Hey thanks Hetty for the Idea of the red velvet cake with oozy raspberry filling my family will love It and yes Lee I guess we will be having a ritual cannibalism act at my daughters baby shower.
But all that aside. Wow Paula great work. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hi Joyce!
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed my blog! Thank you!
Hi – I think the cake is cute. I have thought about making it, but do not like fondant! I think it tastes terrible. Any suggestions on making it without fondant?
Hi Karla!
Sure, you can make Candy Clay. Here is the recipe: http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Candy-Clay-1 it’s super easy to make and tastes great because it uses our Candy Melts!!!! I’ve used it lots of times. I would compare it to what some call “modeling clay”. You could easily use the colors of Candy Melts or you can use the Candy Colorings to change the white Candy Melts.
If you want to use the fondant, you could add a little flavoring, such as, vanilla or almond and knead that in. I like the taste of the chocolate fondant; you may too!
Good luck!
You did a great job! More people need to find Jesus and stop all this mess! When someone takes it over board and does red velvet in the center or like a cake I seen today a pregnant belly cake with see through jello and a plastic baby inside then I think you can bash away but seriously?? Come on we are all grown ups here… No need in acting like grade school children.
keep up the good work!!
