Help, I Left Out My Sugar Sheets!

Upon joining the Wilton food team this January, I was really excited to evaluate our latest development, Sugar Sheets! They are part of Punch. Cut. Decorate!™, an amazing new decorating method that allows anyone to create beautiful cakes and treats with ease, even if they have never decorated before!

Sugar Sheets Sugar Sheets are edible decorating papers. We offer them in a variety of colors and patterns, providing endless possibilities for amazing decorating. We took great lengths to create moisture barrier bags that are re-sealable because we recognize that there are different humidity levels all across the country and that this product will be bought and stored in different environments. I wanted to take the time to make sure you had the most optimal experience with this product, no matter where you live or how long you store the sheets. Here are my tips to help keep the sheets moist:

  1. Plan ahead. I imagine many of you will be as eager as I was to begin working with the sheets. Try to resist pulling the product out of the package until you have a decorating plan.

  2. Only cut the portion of the sheet you’ll use immediately and keep the remainder of the sheets on the plastic backing, sealed securely in their reclosable package.



If your sheet has become brittle, don’t despair! Here is a method to rehydrate it and make it usable:

    Cut the portion of the sheet you will use and peel away the plastic backing. Brush the shiny (back) side of your sugar sheet with room temperature water. The Wilton Water Brush allows for great control when applying water to Sugar Sheets, making it a fantastic tool for rehydrating the sheets. Be sure to completely cover the sheet with an even coat of water – not too much, not too little.
    Allow the sheet time to rehydrate, which will take from 15 to 30 minutes. I recommend checking the sheet at 15 minutes and if it is pliable again, it is ready to use. The sheet may need more time, but be careful that your sheet does not get too wet.
    When your sheet is ready, cut or punch your design and apply to your cake or treat right away.

I hope you enjoy decorating with Sugar Sheets as much as I do. It is a truly incredible product and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Remember – keep them sealed when not in use and plan ahead. Happy Decorating! ?

    Are the sugar sheets flexible enough to bend and stay at a 90 degree angle? I’m planning on using them to make zebra stripes as I have absolutely no experience yet with fondant (just started cake decorating a few weeks ago and have taken the first two classes of the basics course). Thanks for your input and advice.

      Our Sugar Sheets! are very pliable and can be formed into a 90 degree angle – simply fold a sheet and use piping gel or freshly made icing to hold it in place. For a crisp edge, I recommend attaching 2 pieces of Sugar Sheets! with piping gel or freshly made icing. Good luck!

    do I have to punch out the sugar sheet? Can i use a cookie cutter, press hard, then cut the rest witha scissors?

      Although we have designed punches specifically to cut shapes out of Sugar Sheets!, you can use a cookie cutter and kitchen shears. I recommend tracing the shape with a Food Writer Edible Color Marker first, then cut the shape using the shears. Pressing hard on a cookie cutter will not cut through the sheet.

      I was wondering about that. Has anyone tested them in a food-coloring printer? I’d love to know before I try…

      I haven’t tried them in my edible printer yet (I plan on doing so this weekend), but I have painted them directly with food coloring and a brush. They held the color well until I put it on the cake. After that the color slowly leached into the frosting underneath in about an hour or so. The image was just about as clear as I had painted it, just REALLY faded. I plan on waiting to adhere the printed on Sugar Sheet until just before serving.

    Can you use these in a Cricut cake?

      Yes they can be used with Cricut Cake. Set your pressure to medium. You will want to apply a 2 sided tape to the back of the sugar sheet plastic pealing and adhere it to your cake mat OR you can adhere it to a Cricut sticky paper mat. I found I prefer to use 2 sided poster tape and adhear it to my cake mat. It doesnt leave any residue and is super easy to clean up. When you remove your cutting, use a pointed icing spatula, slide it under the sheet cutting and carefully work under to lift the design. Remove any unneeded center cuts for the finished product. Do handle carefully not to tear the sugar sheet. Happy cutting!

    How long can the sugar sheets be left on the cake after the cake has been decorated, and does the cake need to be put in the fridge?

      I used the zebra sheets on a cake and when we went to cut it the next day the sheets were hard and coming away from the cake. I put the cake in the fridge after i decorated it and cut it the next day. Can u tell me what we did wrong if anything.

    I made a cake the night before our Game Day and my sugar sheet flowers seem to melt into the cake. Perfectly visible but I wonder if this is norma?

    I have been a Wilton fan and purchaser of products for years (have taken all classes offered at Michael’s too)…just love cake baking and decorating. I am not a business owner, just a home baker. I have some wonderful friends, who for my 61st birthday last week, surprised me with a party and best of all, they gave me 10 of the cutter inserts, the punch kits and 8 sugar sheets. I cannot wait to get started using these new items. Do you think Wilton will offer a class (at Michael’s) this year? I certainly hope so. Thanks again to Wilton for continuing to bring us great ideas and new products!!!

        I’ve only used the sheets a few times but my guess is that your sheet is to moist or hot. So my first thought would be to dry it out a bit. Maybe with a cool blow dryer or a fan. That’s what I would try.

    How long can I store sugar sheets. I need 7 different colors to make my son’s “Freight Train” birthday cake. I will use less than 1/4 of each color for the cake, so I’d hate the rest to go to waste before I have another chance to use them again.

    I have used the Sugar sheets to do two cakes for customer’s now, and they both have told me that they thought they were beautiful but pulled the sheets off the cakes as they didn’t like them. My question is: Is there a way to make the sheets melt more into the cake instead of them just being a thick sugar sheet layer stuck around the cake? They are pretty, but I don’t wan’t my customers to have to peel things off to enjoy their cakes, please let me know if there is a way to fix this. Thanks :)

    How far in advance can you decorate the cake with the sugar sheets and can they be put in the refrigerator?

      I was wondering the same thing. I will be using the Sugar sheets for the first time this Thursday for a Sweet 16 birthday cake but the party is not until Friday evening. Can I store it in the fridge after decorating? Thanks

        Cakes decorated with sugar sheets that are layered on the surface of the cake may be refrigerated or frozen. However, we do not recommend refrigerating or freezing dimensional designs as the humidity in the refrigerator can cause these designs to wilt.

          Is this noted on your packaging? Because I didn’t see it on the sheets I bought from Michaels and my butterflies wilted all over the cupcakes I made for my daughters bday party!

      Yes, the Sugar Sheets! do work with the cricut cake machine. However, if you’d like to use a food-safe electronic cutting machine, we recommend the following tips for best results:

      •Be sure to remove the Sugar Sheets! from the plastic backing or the blade will not cut through them.
      •Sugar Sheets! must be smoothly and firmly adhered to a cutting mat with shortening (brushed on with pastry brush) before being loaded into machine.
      •Setting your machine for medium pressure is optimal. Low pressure does not cut all the way through the Sugar Sheets! and high pressure drags the Sugar Sheets! around the blade.
      •Note that some of the most intricate designs available on electronic cutting machines are not ideal for use with Sugar Sheets! but following the tips outlined above will help lead to successful results for a majority of designs.

    How far in advance can you put the sugar sheet on the cake? Can you put it on the day before the birthday or does it have to be the day of the birthday?

      We actually recommend that you put the Sugar Sheets! onto your cake or whatever baked treat it is that you are decorating and allow time to set. Over time the sheets adhere to and meld into the icing.

    If I’m making cupped flowers to put onto a cake, can I make the flowers the night before and put them onto the cake the day I need to serve it?

      Sonia, we do not recommend refrigerating or freezing dimensional designs as the humidity in the refrigerator can cause these designs to wilt. So, I suggest that the flowers are made the day of, or if time does not allow do not put in the refrigerator. We also suggest when making dimensional flowers and more, spread a thin layer of Candy Melts candy on shiny sides to attach two pieces of Sugar Sheets! together. Candy gives you the strength needed for decorations to stand up.

    If im making cupcakes on thursday and they arent going to be eaten until saturday, would i be able to add zebra sugar sheets on the top and a fondant rose
    and put it in the fridge?

      You can put the cupcakes in your fridge along with the fondant rose as long as they are not placed in the freezer and the roses are not made of the Sugar Sheets! you will be ok.

      For toppers, dimensional flowers and more, spread a thin layer of Candy Melts candy on shiny sides to attach two sheets together. Candy gives you the strength needed for decorations to stand up. This can also be done with attaching the Sugar Sheets to a piece of fondant as well.

    I just bought Wilton Sugar sheets and a couple of punchers. I tried using it on the day I bought it. I can’t peel the sugar sheets of the back sheet. I tried peeling off from all the corners and sides but I wasn’t successful. Any tips? Thank you.

    Hi There…

    I am looking to use the zebra sugar sheets on top of fondant and was wondering A) can I just attached the whole sheet on a rolled out piece of fondant (wet w a little vodka) and THEN cut out the shapes and B) Can they be made ahead of time and left out? They are going to be cupcake toppers.

    I’m planning to cover the sides of my 2 tier fondant covered cake with sugar sheets. However, I also want to put gum paste flowers on the side of the cake (on top of the sugar sheets). How is it best to attach the flowers to the sugar sheets, and sugar sheets to fondant, to ensure a good adhesion, as they will be on the side of the cake?

    I want to make the grooms cake for my future son-in-law at my daughter and his wedding and I want to use camo sugar sheets. I would like to make the cake the night before and decorate it for the 1pm wedding the next day. Will the cake be ok in a box on my counter? Should I put in the refrigerator?

  29. I used a printed sugar sheet to decorate cookies. The black turned green after a couple of days. I applied the sugar sheet over buttercream icing. Is there a way to keep the black from “fading” to green??

    Hi I’m using a4 cake topper for the first time! I’m worried in case it rips when peeling sheet off ,it mentions in the instruction that you pop it in the freezer for around 2min before applying it to the cake , could you give me your view on this ?
