A plastic ice cream cone? A heart cutter? What is this and how does it make a Calla Lily? Well, I’m glad you asked! The Calla Lily Former Set is very easy to use and gives cakes a beautiful, elegant look. Before you get started, there are a few items you will need:
- Calla Lily Former Set
- Fondant Shaping Foam Set
- Ball tool from the Gum Paste and Fondant Tool Set
- Dusting pouch
- Roll and Cut Mat
- Perfect Height Rolling Pin
- Ready to Use Gum Paste
- Rolled Fondant Primary Colors Multi-Pack
- Gum Paste Adhesive
- Round Cut-Outs™
To begin, roll out the white gum paste about 1/8 of an inch thick, then use the heart cutter to cut out six shapes. Be sure to cover up whatever gum paste you are not working with – it dries fast! Use the ball tool on the thin piece of the Fondant Shaping Foam Set to thin out the sides of your heart shape.
Next, with the point of the heart facing down, wrap the gum paste around a cone that has been dusted with powdered sugar. Glue the two round pieces of the heart together with gum paste adhesive. Gently fold the sides of the flower up to give it that Lily look. Allow that to dry.
Next, you can make the center of the flower. Roll out yellow gum paste an 1/8 of an inch. I used the yellow fondant from the Rolled Fondant Primary Color Multi-Pack to tint the gum paste.
Use the medium size cutter from the Round Cut-Outs. Cut that circle in half, roll into a ball then elongate that shape to about 1 1/4 inch. Brush the shape 3/4 of the way with gum paste adhesive and roll in sprinkling sugar. To make this process easier, you can stick a piece of uncooked spaghetti into the shape.
One of the last steps in this process is to make the calyx. Roll out gum paste tinted green to 1/16 of an inch. For this, it is helpful to use the pink guide rings that come with the Perfect Height Rolling Pin.
Cut out a circle using the medium cutter from the Round Cut Outs. Like the center, you cut this circle in half. With the round part facing down, wrap the half circle around the base of the Lily and connect with Gum Paste Adhesive.Â
To even further the realistic look of this Lily, dry brush some Leaf Green Pearl Dust on the outside of the flower.
Once the Calla Lily has dried, take it off the cone. Apply Gum Paste Adhesive to the remaining 1/4 of the center and slightly press into the flower. It is best to let the flowers sit overnight to be sure they are fully dry. Depending on how many you make this can be a lengthy process so enlist some help and make an afternoon of it!
When the Calla Lilies are done, there are endless possibilities as to the cakes to can make with them. You can make leaves border like I did with the Rose Leaf Fondant Cut and Press Set.
I have very recently fallen in love with fondant and gum paste. Calla Lilies are just one of the many beautiful flowers you can make. Enjoy!
